Unfortunately it was just their business plan back then. They did the same thing for Transformers at the time - they had a great cartoon and toyline plus the original Classics toyline going gangbusters and they canceled them both for the Bay movies (or more specifically they only ever planned them to be gap fillers until the movie stuff started). I believe I even recall reading about them saying they didn't want consumers to be "confused" by multiple product offerings in the Q&As.
Even within the TF toylines they made weird decisions like changing bot's colors so there wouldn't be two red planes on the shelf at the same time. What kills me about all of this was I really feel like they made specific mention of the head guy's death - this makes it sound like they just used it as the public-facing excuse to cancel the show.

Renegades felt like Dick Cheney or Mitt Romney as secret cabal leader conspiracy theories on steroids more than anything else.
That said, I never liked them leaning into one particular political ideology or the other for Cobra. You had left wing loons like Baroness coupled with right wing loons like Cobra Commander and hicks from the sticks like the Dreadnoks and actual corporations manipulating wars for profit gain in MARS and Extensive Enterprises. Making CC into a bin Laden type with one ideology never worked for me. I always saw Cobra as SPECTRE, whether it be the goofy ass plans of the cartoon or the guy comes up from nothing to rule a terror organization hell bent on making money and ruling from the shadows ala Blofeld in the Joe comics. Renegades was an interesting take but CC to me is way more nuanced than just a standard terrorist or greedy globalist. |

Renegades was a brilliant concept. The A Team conceit seems a bit generic, but it was a terrific way to introduce the characters and team by starting with a tight group and building.
The real genius though was Cobra itself as a corporation hiding a global fascist movement in plain sight. That's the realest GI Joe has ever gotten and incredibly appropriate for modern times. It would be ridiculously easy for such a thing to happen in America today. Think about it: infiltrate all levels of society with commerce/consumerism and marketing/propaganda, hide a military under the guise of a private security subsidiary, infiltrate nation-states by providing "private security services" and forces, and with the way we turn a blind eye to corporate shenanigans and greed these days, you can take over the world without the status quo noticing. We're only a step away from such a thing occurring right now. I've been working on some fan fiction with that approach. It always struck me that even for a silly cartoon some of the plots were very forward-thinking in terms of how Cobra Commander used mass media. Easy to picture how it could play out with modern social media. Last edited by Adonirum; 01-27-2023 at 03:16 PM.. |

Rise of Cobra led to a lot of bad decisions by Hasbro, basically.
At least with the Bayverse the toys sold in insane numbers, so you can KINDA justify all the changes that caused with Transformers. |

That was around the time Hasbro went balls to the walls with Star Wars TVC style figures in every 3 3/4 line, and would it have made any positive difference if they kept that one line 1980s style still? |
