Given all of these studios' vast catalog of old content, I don't see any reason why they can't offer it on free, ad-supported tiers.

I think the argument against that is that a big reason people turned to streaming in the first place was that they didn't want any ads. A couple companies have played around with that idea if memory serves.
We're still sort of at the halfway point of what streaming is going to be I'd guess. |

So now say you either pay more or in 2024 you're going to see ENDLESS political ads every five minutes like you do on TV. Or like how during sporting events you get 50 million Sportsbet commercials. |

Nobody really knows what the long-term future of streaming will be, and they're all experimenting trying to figure that out. Peacock is actually discontinuing its free tier entirely. Meanwhile, Warner Bros. pulled a whole bunch of content off HBO Max, including very recent shows like Westworld, in anticipation of launching a new FAST (Free Ad-Supported Television) service that will be their eventual home. |

Isn't Warner going to merge HBO Max with Discovery +?

They just licensed a lot of that HBO stuff, including Westworld, to Roku and Tubi, and announced they're partnering with them on FAST channels. |

Yes, that's expected as well. Discovery owns Warner Bros. now. They've already moved some Discovery content over to HBO Max, with the goal of merging the two streamers entirely in the near future, which will of course bring a price hike. I don't think it's official yet, but the whole thing will most likely be rebranded as just "Max," dropping the "HBO" from the name.
