With thanks to Rich Helscher, the Animated '80s site now plays host to all five scripts from Operation Dragonfire: the miniseries that kicked off DiC Entertainment's continuation of G.I Joe.
Written by former Sunbow producer Doug Booth, this miniseries sees Sgt. Slaughter and his Marauders dealing with the twin threats of the returning Cobra Commander and a traitor in their midst. Read all five at Animated '80s: https://animated80s.blogspot.com/202...-1991-dic.html Last edited by Greebrun; 01-20-2023 at 12:56 PM.. Reason: Scripts moved to new site |

Interesting find.
While Operation: Dragonfire was serviceable, it only got worse from there. |

Well, there are little moments of dialogue in these scripts that do their best to capture the flavour of the old G.I Joe, but they ended up sterilized out of the final product.

Awesome stuff.
I loved Dragonfire as a kid. It brought Cobra Commander back and still kinda/sorta felt like an episode of G.I. Joe. I'm a fan of what came next for the sheer unbridled absurdity, but I can't help but wish that we'd gotten more stuff like this and less stuff like Pigskin Commandos. Always thought it was interesting how The Movie was so quickly swept under the rug to such an extent that Cobra is back in the Himalayas with no mention or reference to Cobra-La, and Snakeman CC didn't have the multiple eyes. Falcon reappears in the second season and is still Duke's brother, but that and CC being a snake at the start of Dragonfire are the only aspects of The Movie that carried over.

I skimmed through it and obviously, the big thing is the hand waving of Sunbow's dangling plot threads. The script isn't really impressive, but its a serviceable intro to DIC GIJoe. I'd give it a C or C-. The interesting thing is its basically from the pov of Cobra troops, Scoop and Alley Viper.
GIJoe and Cobra actually seem smaller than before. Still not exactly sure what the heck Dragonfire is, it feels like a catch all energy that can do anything the plot needs. LOL So much of the tension is built on Baroness being angry about Destro. Destro and Baroness are true believers and twisted and work together. They do have relationship problems, but not Destro outright dumping her for a Dreadnok, and he hated the Dreadnoks. Zarana's deal was loving Mainframe, but because they were on different sides, can't be together. Zarana here just comes off a bimbo chasing a rich older guy. So, this doesn't make sense as a one-to-one continuation of Sunbow. The scripting of DIC Serpentor's uncertain fate is interesting as it hits kind of that Kevin Smith Tusk movie horror vibes. I never realized the transformation was more a fusion of man and iguana, as opposed to in Sunbow, Cobra Commander was mutated into a snake. Cobra Commander claims its temporary, Gnawgahyde truanting the transformed Seprentor of throwing an iguana on the bbq, script has Seprentor scared and breaks his restraints and scampers off into the jungle. |

Just to advise that the Operation: Dragonfire scripts have now been moved to my new side-blog for other shows not involving Sunbow or Marvel - Animated '80s: https://animated80s.blogspot.com/202...-1991-dic.html
