People also used to hide things behind those TMNT Jakks Pacific Big Figs. That stopped for a while when this meme started picking up steam. https://old.reddit.com/r/funny/comme..._to_find_this/ |

That's awesome. I once found a pristine Crimson Guard at a Ben Franklin five-and-dime store in the late 1990's. It was hanging behind some 99 cent generic cowboy figures. $2.69 and it was mine. I still have it packed away somewhere in a tote.

I stashed because I was tired of doing a solid for local collectors (super saturated market competing against resellers) only to have them find it before our exchange could happen. Then I'd have to remember to bring it with me and stand in line after work to return it.
So, I'd stash and tell them where. After that, there was maybe one time I had to actually return something to the peg. Funny how that works.

Back in 2000 I came across a mom and pop store that had stock from the eightes. I picked up my Mamba there at retail. I also grabbed an Adder, a couple of vehicle battle packs and some fisher price adventure people.
I remember wondering how they could stay in business when they still had things like Playskool Definitely dinosaurs on the shelves. They closed like a month later before I could get back to buy more. |

That reminds me of when we were driving through the US (I wanna say outside Philly, but who knows... somewhere between Boston and DC), stopped at a mall, and the KB Toys there was randomly clearing out all sorts of amazing later-run NES games and a ton of accessories for pennies on the dollar. I got a ton of good stuff there, including my NES Advantage that I still have hooked up to my MAME box, for maybe $20 all-in.
I wanted to go back on the way home since we had the extra room, but we took a different route. |

I always figured that was the scalpers themselves ruining items they couldn't afford so the one they could would be worth more.

But, yes, I remember the rationale that damaged cards would supposedly repulse emphatic purchasers - similar to the effects of deodorant and talking to women. Well the joke was on them. Those things only repel a relatively small group of (MOC) collectors like myself. |

There was also the "what about the children?!" group, since only kids open and play with toys.

In 2005, I found some one off figures of various movie toylines in this comic shop I used to go to, the cards were worn but I figured they took in toy collections...in 2012 or so they pulled out some 25th comic packs for me from the storeroom
Which reminds me of how disappointed I feel for the small breaks in collecting I took in college or during the 50th line... I was constantly in Targets or TRU during ROC doing price matches for baskets of figures while in college...bought what I could even though I was getting into other hobbies but in 2010 I passed up some 25th comic packs in Odd Lots, why? I'm not sure cause it's not like they were expensive Collected extensively in 2012 to ignore some upsetting things in my life, Retaliation's line kept me busy, wish I wouldn've sought out more 50th or got into the FSS |
