Are you sure? Because I could swear someone asked him that on his Instagram at some point and he said he just does computer renders. It's possible that I misread and he does both... I'm not 100% sure, since I don't have total recall of what I read.
I mean, his Instagram name is 2dsculpts... that would imply just computer-based, as an actual physical sculpt would be 3d. He recently updated his IG. It makes sense Hasbro contracted him to design Shadow Tracker and Low Light. He created those POC designs.

Maybe this is a dumb statement or an oversimplification, but aren't "digital renders" and "sculpt" work close to the same thing?
I could be wrong, but I think all modern sculpting is digital at this point and they use the sculpt work to create the digital renders that they show to us. My assumption is someone line Tony gets the grayed out 3d sculpt files from someone like Fred and then he goes in and applies color and deco. I'm just guessing here but I think it goes something like this: Lenny designs figure (using a sketch or illustration to determine gear loadout, style references, details, etc.), then a digital sculptor like Fred takes that blueprint and brings it to life in a 3d program with all the fine details, textures, etc. Then finally Tony comes in with the coloring and deco to put the final layer on the design. They send the digital files of the sculpt and color rendering to a factory to produce a prototype and eventually a final figure. Kinda like how comic books have a penciler, inker, and colorist. |

And then, stemming from that, whether Hasbro internal or contractors deserve the lion's share of credit for how cool the line is. But perhaps that's just me.

Haven't been following the full conversation, but the way I've been reading it is largely about figuring out "who is the creative designer behind most Classified figures?" more than what the technical work being done is.

:-D BTW, am I the only who's noticed that the head sculpt for Classified Falcon is just as derpy as the 25th version? I wouldn't go so far as to say they are identical, but 25th Falcon looks like Team America Matt Damon and for the most part so does Classified Falcon. Is it possible that the artist simply copied the 25th?? Because it seems like a deliberate attempt was made to pivot away from the regular (and often amazing) faces/head sculpts that are typical for Classified to make Falcon look like... something else. 100% Positive. I've followed his work since the days leading up to POC. He's been known as "2D Toys" for almost 15 years. He transitioned into digital when it became the industry standard. He mainly features his digital sculpts on his IG account. You can check out his IG right now and see it's mostly his digital work. He's one of the partners at Boss Fight Studio. (I realize this 100% makes me an Aczon fanboy. I'll own that.)

The way I understand it, Lenny creates a rough sketch of the figure to be made. It's then passed along the design team, who make additions/add weapons etc..., then it goes back to Lenny and he signs off on any additions to his sketch. After that, he probably does a more detailed sketch and that is coloured in. Then that is outsourced to a freelance computer artist to create the render. After the render is made, it returns to Hasbro and Lenny signs off on it, again. If he likes it, it goes to the sculpting team to create a physical mould of the figure. If not, he makes notes and it returns to the computer artist to make changes. Something like that.

I think the render IS the sculpt. It's the sculpt with color and printing applied.
