I've been thinking over the Hawk vs. Duke thing in the cartoon (I don't know the comics well enough) until I noticed something...
Here's some of the pics from gijoe.com I pulled until it went defunct In Sunbow promo images Duke is onviously shown to be leadership for Joe [img][/img] [img][/img] However in the DIC one Hawk is shown to be, browsing images online seems to confirm this [img][/img] For those of you who have seen the DIC cartoons is this true? -Hawk was 82 wave so he was leader for the comics and early Toy commercials. -Duke was leader for the 83/84 waves so he was made leader for the Sunbow miniseries parts of GI Joe Season 1. Since Hawk was no longer on shelves. -Flint hit in 85 and leadership was kind of shared between him and Duke for the back half of Season 1 as Duke was sidelined from the main cast to cameos to make room for the new wave of toys. -Hawk version 2 figure hit in 86 so he was back as leader for most of season 2 and the movie. -General Hawk figure hit in 91 so he was back as leader for the DIC series selling that years wave of toys. They went with the leaders for the Toyline waves at the time the media was created. That way kids could buy the leader for the Joe team at retail.

The DIC cartoon did Hawk dirty. Made him kinda goofy. Nothing like Hawk from the comics. And Duke seemed wrong not being voiced by Michael Bell.

I know we're all just killing time here, shooting the shit and speculating on what these reveals could be. But one thing worth noting that they put some emphasis on in various communications is that these additional figures are "new recruits". So that pretty much rules out any already released characters and likely rules out any already announced characters.
So Scarlett is surely out, and possibly Hawk too. I'm pretty sure all the marketing for this campaign is tongue-in-cheek metafiction like the old Transformers STARS campaign or the original Steel Brigade marketing. "Haslab" doesn't literally exist in the world of G.I. Joe and they'd be a heinous, amoral arms dealer for equipping both sides. This is all half-serious banter for an advertisement. I'd also add that the marketing copy treats the HISS and Dragonfly as new vehicles, in addition to treating Rip Cord as a recruit. (And yet, I'm pretty sure we saw images of HISS Tanks multiple times in Classified before the campaign.) This is basically like the old TV ads. It would be entertaining to make a canon out of them (Starscream built the Monstet Pretenders! etc.) but that's not what this is. It's just a commercial like those ones for G.I. Joe cereal where Duke helps a kid get past Cobra to have breakfast in his kitchen. Any new figure is a "recruit" and everything rugged and detailed is "milspec". Because this is an advertisement, not canon. |
