It was game over when Larry Hama was not invited to the movie's Shinto kick off ceremony. You know, he is only the most culturally significant Japanese-American of the 1980s who was a primary developer of the entire franchise.
The most culturally significant Japanese-American of the 1980s. He is not well known, but he had a very significant impact on Americana. If Hasbro would get a clue, they would pay him a comfortable stipend to travel the world to be a spokesperson of the brand. This is real home grown, long term inclusivity, not lip service virtue signalling. The most culturally significant Japanese-American of the 1980s. The most culturally significant Japanese-American of the 1980s. The most culturally significant Japanese-American of the 1980s. If someone here has pull at Hasbro, please send them this message. Maybe they want obfuscate creatorship to dissuade ownership claims, but that is wrong headed and counter productive. That is what contracts are for. Hasbro is leaving a mountain of (almost) free 2022 goodwill on the table. Doing so is not performing their fiduciary responsibility. It is an easy win, and one that is well earned by decades of work.

No matter what media he's in, Tommy is the goodest boy.
Even Andrew Koji could not resist bringing the pathos. That face he made when he was in the garden and he found out Snake Eyes betrayed him was heartbreaking. Me: "Fuck you, Snake Eyes, you litle shit!" |

To be fair, I don't think Guardians of the Galaxy really had any fans or any real legacy material to draw upon, opening the door to creative divergence to the original characters. All the characters were z-list characters that weren't really used. I can say that I don't think I read a single comic that had even the smallest guest appearance any of those characters until the movie came out and became a hit. They wouldn't have been able to get away with that with any of their legacy characters.
The real trick is to stay true to a character while creating an original story. One of the reasons The Amazing Spider-Man films weren't well received is because they made Peter into some annoying skater punk. Regardless of the story you tell, Peter should always act like Peter. That's where the G.I Joe films failed. Almost none of the characters felt right in the way they were portrayed. As for Snake Eyes, they should've stuck much closer to the material. Have Golding's Snake Eyes and Koji's Storm Shadow meat as gound infantry troops in Afghanistan. After their time in Afghanistan have Koji's Storm Shadow bring Golding's Snake Eyes into the Arashikage Clan and have Zartan be the main antagonist instead of Kenta. Make Akiko Jinx. |

Goof balls playing masked characters, but they gotta be unmasked and they just look like goof balls.
The only reason to adapt Snake Eyes is if you are going to do the story Hama came up with. Otherwise, enough. But at this point, the Snake Eyes name may be damaged for theater level projects. I suppose I should finally make a go to watch all of Snake Eyes, just so I can say I've seen the unholy trilogy of Joe live action movies. |

They should have done the comic origin, with flashbacks to Vietnam (or, if they wanted to modernize it, the Iraq War). Show Snake Eyes going through the military with Stalker and Storm Shadow and then coming home to be told his family was killed. He then goes to Japan and finds Storm Shadow and SS introduces him to his uncles and gets him accepted into the clan, despite being gaijin. They train and Snake Eyes begins to eclipse SS in skill (except in archery, where SS remains supreme). Hard Master is showing SE secret skills one day and he's cut down by one of SS's arrows. SS flees the area and SE returns to the US, where he is met by Stalker and Hawk, who want to recruit him for a new special unit to combat this new foe called Cobra.
Mid credits, Storm Shadow meets with Cobra High Command and we see Destro and Baroness, with a man sitting on a throne shrouded in shadows. Storm Shadow pledges himself to Cobra and the Commander laughs. In the background, we see Zartan, the true assassin of Hard Master, watching.

I need to rewatch Scott Adkins "Ninja", but I remember it having better "Snake Eyes energy" than any of the 3 Joe movies so far... kind of a mix of the Arashikage storyline with a dash of "Enter the Ninja" and the Eric van Lustbader books.
The only difference being that the evil Japanese ninja didn't hate the Caucasian intruder like in most of these stories. In GI Joe, they were buddies that grew apart over a misunderstanding. |
