For certain there would be more cartoon viewers than comic subscribers during the 1980's, but even those children watching television were constantly bombarded with these commercials for the comic before, during, and after each cartoon episode.
I am curious, how did you not notice these commercials on the television while watching the cartoon episodes? |

Same thing with TMNT. I got the comics after seeing the show and HATED the comics. To this day I hate them. |

To most collectors, that's what GI Joe is too. The comic has much less reach than the cartoon or the toy line.

They didn't show the GIJoe comic book commercials on TV where I grew up, I didn't even know there was a comic until late 1988 or early 1989. I was in Hill's Department store on the way back to the toy section and taking a short cut through the clothes section. There was a random stand with a bunch of books on it and what caught my eye was a small GIJoe book. It was comic magazine #12. It had issues 32,33, and 34. 34 quickly became my favorite GIJoe anything.
I had to go dig Ace out, he had been "retired" for three years or so by then. We'd moved and my old toys went into boxes, or just got thrown away. But I found Ace. I wanted Wild Weasel so bad, but by then it was far too late to find a Rattler. Back around 2000 or maybe even it was 1999. The first thing I bought on ebay was Wild Weasel. |

The comics got ads and sold well for first couple years of release, but the number of comics sold was nothing in comparison to how many people watched the cartoon. An average Joe comic at best would sell around 50,000 copies, often much less than that and it kept going down for years.
The cartoon was watched by millions |

Blasphemy! Books? People read books? I've spent a small fortune rebuilding my Find Your Fate (Choose Your Adventure) collection. I'm not sure if you're implying *new* viewers or old, but I still watch the Sunbow series once or twice a year and read the occasional collected set.
Same with stuff like Sailor Moon, DBZ, etc. Guess people taking them home to show their kids or maybe to feel like a kid again. |

Walmart has a "collector con" thing in July and I seem to remember Target having something similar. So I'm guessing Duke/bike will go up when the TF, Star Wars, and other companies items all go up, whenever that is.
