Operation: Recall's roots date back to 1989, when a naive but ambitious ten year old set out to design his very own action figure. In 1989, the Toy Wars were in full force. On the battle lines were the likes of Kirk Bozigian, Ron Rudat, Larry Hama, Ed Morrill, Doug Hart, and Bill Merklein. These intrepid toy warriors produced countless action figures which are still celebrated today. As the decades wore on, and the Toy Wars cooled, they each received an Honorable Discharge ? having performed their duties well and having faithfully executed the mission: to entertain a generation Decades later, in an era of action figure stagnation and replication, that still naive but ambitious 40-something decided to do something ?recall these legendary veterans to active duty for one more tour in the Toy Wars! Together, they will create exciting all new action figures to reignite the Toy Wars. Will you join them on this mission? Enlist today! https://3djoes.us12.list-manage.com/...&id=7b9c3d1bd7 MEET THE TEAM: RON RUDAT Ron Rudat served as the G.I. Joe figure designer from the launch of A Real American Hero in 1982 until he moved off of the brand in 1986. Ron also designed several vehicles, decals sheets, and the timeless Cobra logo! KIRK BOZIGIAN Kirk Bozigian was called to spearhead the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero launch in 1982. Kirk worked with Ron Rudat to refine each figure design, and continued to serve the brand as Brand Manager and Vice President of Boys Toys through 1994. LARRY HAMA Larry Hama joined the team in advance of the 1982 A Real American Hero launch. His imagination transformed action figures into a universe of entertainment as he authored hundreds of G.I. Joe comics and file cards. ED MORRILL Ed Morrill, a package design and brand identity executive, was called to serve G.I. Joe in 1969. His first assignment was the 1970 Adventure Team rebranding. Morrill served for 20 years, overseeing packaging design and illustration. DOUG HART Doug Hart joined Hasbro in 1984 as an illustrator ? initially working on My Little Pony. He was called to serve the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero brand in 1987 and painted beautiful figure and box art until then end of the line in 1994. BILL MERKLEIN Bill Merklein was perhaps the most prolific figure sculptor behind the G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero brand. He worked for Hasbro as a freelance sculptor from 1983 to 1989 and during that time he sculpted over 70 G.I. Joe figures. MISSION OBJECTIVES Together, we will create all new action figure concepts. We will document the techniques and processes of these legendary creators. And we will produce exciting new action figures ready to join your armies. CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS: JOIN THE OPERATION: RECALL TEAM SUBMIT YOUR ACTION FIGURE CONCEPTS! https://www.operationrecall.com/submissions.html This thread will serve as the official Operation: Recall Q&A. Fire away with questions and I'll do my best to respond in a timely manner. To get us started, see the first comment below with several Qs & As from another thread. R. Hello 'Tankers!
Thank you for sharing my excitement for Operation: Recall! I've just updated the web site and added the call for submissions. Simply submit your figure concepts to Operation: Recall by following the instructions on the page linked below. Ron Rudat, Kirk Bozigian and Mark Pennington will pick from these concepts which ideas they'd like to explore. There are no guarantees your concept will be selected, but we guarantee it won't be if you don't take the shot! https://www.operationrecall.com/submissions.html Next I'll try to answer some of the questions posted on this thread. Q by OldBreed: I wonder if there's a limit to submissions? A by 3DJoes: Three per person, please. Q by TheOverlordCorp: I assumed that would be a pay tier. A by 3DJoes: That was my initial thought, but I've decided NO pay to play. Everyone can submit concepts. May the best concepts win! Q by Dreadnok Twins: Do they have to be Joes? Can they be Dreadnoks or named characters? I'd love to see an updated version of my favourite biker twins with updated/reimagined dossiers! A by 3DJoes: Unless this becomes an officially licensed product, these will not be Joes, Cobras, Dreadnoks, etc. I am in touch with Hasbro and look forward to pitching the idea. This would be a 33 year old dream coming to fruition if it becomes licensed. If now, we are still ready to roll with two committed manufacturing partners. Q by OldBreed: I doubt very much we can do characters in Hasbro's family. Though I don't know what kind of licensing arrangement he has with Hasbro, if any. A by 3DJoes: None yet, but there's hope. See previous answer. Q by xasonnex: I am a little worried about oversaturation. Black Major has been operating for years, we've got Strike Force Alpha and Call Sign Longbow both going for "brand new Joe-like figures" and Hasbro is back in O-ring business. This could be the best of them all, hands-down, but I fear there is a finite number of fans with a finite amount of money, and if it gets spread too thin...maybe I'm overthinking. A by 3DJoes: Black major offers repaints. I don't say that disparagingly, it just an honest observation from someone that has quite a few of his figures. Operation: Recall will feature all new action figure concepts by the toy industry legends that created the characters we still revere to this day. Callsign: Longbow looks awesome, and I'll be backing that Kickstarter without hesitation. Q by CapBritain: I hope this thing of getting your own character created isn't US-only. I have about 6 ideas already: a Scout Sniper US Marine, a USAF Security Policeman, a USAF Pararescueman, a 2 Para sniper and an SBS commando. A by 3DJoes: The call for submissions knows no geographical boundaries. May the best action figure concepts win! Q by OldBreed: Well I've got two ideas drafted so far, most of the research done already. I'd like to have at least one more. A by 3DJoes: Three is the limit, so make it a good one! Quote by Dod Ear: Now states 3/15/22. I'd imagine there's a great deal of coordination that need to take place in a project of this scope, so that date may need to change again. All good. I'm looking forward to supporting whenever they launch. A by 3DJoes: THANK YOU for this. We've been plugging away for 2+ years now, so yes the timing may fluctuate a bit as things come together. The most important thing is that the creators are enjoying the work and that the final product is impeccable. Q by captain mal: Wow. This is unbelievably cool. I'm really looking forward to seeing Matthew Lecroy's painted sample! This is almost exactly what I envisioned a 'retro' line being. Hasbro needs to license this into the GIJoe brand asap. A by 3DJoes: He knocked it out of the park! Check out the carded sample mock up on the submissions page to see more: https://www.operationrecall.com/submissions.html Q by OldBreed: I reached out on FB. Apparently he's awaiting a meeting with Hasbro. I honestly don't think they'll go for it. But if they do, I'm gonna petition him to be put in charge of GI Joe. A by 3DJoes: I've got to at least give them a chance! Creating all new, official G.I. Joes with the creative geniuses of the 80s and 90s back in action would be a dream come true. I pitched Retelo to them in 1989, I might as well give it one more go in 2022! If they are not interested, we have a clear path forward under the Operation: Recall banner. Again, thank you all for sharing my excitement for Operation: Recall! I'm going to create an official Operation: Recall thread here and start a Q&A for more rapid future responses. R. Last one.
Having already submitted mine (because I'm impatient), am I allowed to submit addendums? I did submit mine all in one document. |

TBD, awaiting word from Hasbro. Sure thing, just upload the same file name, and add V2 at the end please, so I can know at a glance one replaces the other. Thanks! |

Are we aiming to have the characters fit into the era of the Joe toyline, not only in terms of the look of the figure and packaging, but also the character? I mean I know GI Joe was progressive compared to reality in having Ranger qualified women in the team, but eg, there were no women in the SEALs or Green Berets, so are we able to submit such concepts? Also, of course, the weapons and gear, are we to be aiming for 1980s/early 1990s specific gear like M16s versus FN SCARs or HK 416s?

Once Ron and Kirk were done with it, it was modernized with the addition of a drone. So, I'd say just submit your dreams, whatever those might be :-D |

Do you prefer submissions all in one file, or one file per character?
