I just wish they hadn't gone with the Operation Blackout art style. Even CC's figure has the bellhop uniform. I don't entirely blame Renegade, though, because that was probably the prevailing Hasbro design when the game was in the design stage. It would be cool if future expansions and revisions are more ARAH inspired like Classified.

I'm passing on the game for that reason.
I actually regret preordering the RPG sourcebook now that I've seen more of the art. I would have thought they had time to fix that given how long it's taken to get the book together and how dated the Blackout (Bellhop) designs are. For an RPG, you basically design everything in your head, the art is just fluff pieces. The miniatures are also not required at all to play, the core gameplay design is meant to not even use miniatures. They simply offer minis as an optional accessory, you can sub them for action figures if you want to use minis. In the GI Joe game group theres folks already planning on using their ME figs to play. Their other games also seem to be mixing up art styles also. The card game mainly draws from IDW books and some new art, while Mission Critical is using both ARAH and Classified art and designs, while the cards feature IDW random artwork from ARAH and their other spin offs Last edited by PanzerKrake; 03-06-2022 at 01:18 PM.. |

It uses the same system as Renegade's Power Rangers board game with some rule adjustments to better fit GI Joe. Search "how to play power rangers heroes of the grid" on youtube and those rules will give you a general idea of the game.
But broadly: You and other players each control a Joe character with individual ten card decks. You draw from your deck at the beginning of fights and those cards are the attacks you can use. Your deck is also your health and enemy attacks discard cards from it; if it runs out of cards, you're knocked out of that fight. Waves of Cobra troops will deploy on the game board that you have to defeat. If there are too many Cobras on the board, you lose. Sub-bosses like Major Bludd will also deploy. A boss, Cobra Commander in the base game, will eventually deploy. Defeat the boss, win the game. Last edited by PanzerKrake; 03-06-2022 at 10:13 AM.. |

Are the miniatures plastic or metal?

I'm glad to see this new design direction in Classified, I can hardly wait to see more of Jinx and the sniper characters. If it really is true that they dumped it in favor of ARAH then it will sadden me. Any GI joe line has the capability for several takes. In the new 3.75 Duke had about four or five versions, Classified could very well be the same catering to both tastes. Hope they see it that way and support Operation Blackout designs as one of several versions. (They'd get money from four fronts, Fans of OB, fans of ARAH, fans from both and completionists)

I'm not really that familiar with RPGs in general, or Renegade games in particular, but I am interested in the stuff they've announced. The board game with miniatures is separate from the RPG with miniatures, right? It's a bit confusing when they've announced it all at the same time.

Makes me wish they had full color miniatures. Still love (and have) that mail away set from the 80s.

The 40mm board game minis will be easier to paint, especially for inexperienced painters with nearly 50-year-old eyes.
