What stinks is from here it's only going to hurt smaller retailers. I preordered way too many (all but Tomax/Xamot/Crock) and coolstoysnow and toysnowman have my money already - a few hundred across 13ish figures. If I cancel that goes back to me.
Hiya's lethargy won't hurt only them, and that sucks.

For me, this has always been about nostalgia, and part of that was buying toys at toy prices. It was a cheap hobby because I was buying cheap toys I found at the store, just like I did as a child. I never looked at this as a "collectible" thing, I certainly never wanted to pay collectible prices. But before I knew it, I was preordering, and ebay-ing, and paying way too much for what are realistically just toys... Like, no matter how cool it is, a brand new, mass-produced action figure just isn't worth 20+ dollars to me. And it's particularly galling when the quality of the thing isn't any better, or even worse, than a $10 figure. You just gotta draw the line somewhere, and that line is well short of $20.

It's not only that, but the toys you can actually get have also gotten ridiculously expensive. We're in an odd sort of bubble here where we've apparently lost perspective on things a bit. It's like we've just come to accept the reality of $20+ action figures without really thinking about it. Some of that is likely due to the accumulated effect of paying ebay prices on the secondary market...it's like when confronted with these sorts of prices for items sold by the companies themselves (rather than by re-sellers/scalpers), we think, "Well...I guess $27.00 for a brand new figure isn't too bad if I'm paying that on ebay anyway..." We've seemingly forgotten what this shit actually is.

And it’s wild seeing 6” figures go on sale for like 8 bucks. 1:18 is like 17 to 45 these days (counting pgv, which I dont have any of).

They may very well be pushing the Joe line back even further due to low pre-order numbers, if anything. |

Don't forget, it's also a very American line being sold exclusively to China. Why Hasbro specifically wants Joes not sold in the West is a head scratcher. Judging from the designs I would guess this was all done earlier in the Classified line, like back when Hasbro was planning this big O-Ring relaunch that never materialized. And they didn't want competing 3.75 lines at retail (ME, O-Ring, and ReAction). As it is we know Hasbro isn't particularly excited about multiple lines at the same scale in the same franchise, minus Star Wars.
I'm not sure how many POs they're actually getting per figure. Doesn't even seem like some of the bigger Japanese online stores like AmiAmi and HobbySearch are getting these. Honestly don't think this is a high priority line for Hiya. |
