Hey, I mostly lurk around here but this project has kinda re-lit a flame in my heart to engage on the fan creation side more. I submitted these last night, just in time.
I hadn't looked at many other people's entrees until I was almost done to make sure I wasn't unconsciously influenced. I'm going to read through and catch up today, excited to see what everyone came up with! Meet Runback (with PAC-DOG), Deadzone and the LARVA trooper. |

Those two would both make very interesting figures, imo. Just sucks that these are O-ring.

I kept that customization usefulness in mind with the PAC-DOG as well and that's where the idea to use the standard backpack hole on it's sides came from. I really love the idea of being able to plug any reasonably sized backpack in there and seeing what kinda combinations people would come up with! It also seemed like a cool play feature that any other chosen figure designs could interact with. As for LARVA, the WORMS and Frag Viper designs were definitely on my mind. (And the Sonic Fighters Viper, too) I wanted to give a wink to them without repeating too closely, I think I landed on something that works well even on it's own. I knew I wanted to do at least one armored trooper type character, and I was thinking about what kinda combat specialties were missing or uncommonly represented and it just fell into place.

Ok, making a start on replies…
First thought was a list of all the contributions mentioned in the thread. So far I have: Starshyna Scar: Vikhr, an ex-Oktober Guard, reluctant defector to Joes, page 12. Rob: Buckwild, artillery Forward Observer and survivalist with multifunction canoe/snowboard/lean-to/hideaway and observation gear, page 12. OldBreed: Lilith (redhead pixie-haired lady paratrooper), Kodiak (arctic operative with skis and pole, good companion for v2 Stalker) and Bokor (leader of a new faction of Voodoo mercs). Mostly on page 13, Bokor biography and further description on page 14. AnimatedTako: Runback (supply specialist lady w/ robo-logistician load carrying dog), Deadzone (electronic warfare and signals analysis specialist — great w/ Mainframe and Dial Tone imo), Larva trooper (sort of the enemy equivalent of Buckwild? Cobra mortarmen and artillery observers, good w/ Maggot, W.O.R.M.S., Frag Viper), all page 15, more details on 16. CapBritain: Tiger, ex-ARVN (South Vietnamese army) Ranger with a hat based on George Takei’s character in The Green Berets, body after ~ ‘82-‘83 Stalker body, page 15. Who’d I miss? I decided to start with Vikhr.
While this is an awkward time to be talking about Red Army troops, I think this is a pretty neat design. The palette and overall feel seem like a little like WW2 throwbacks, but I can imagine this guy fitting in with modern-by-80s-oring-era standards guys like CS Longbow?s Rezhnikov and GRU Spetz figures, and then I also feel like the futuristic smoothness of his chest armor look and cutting edge goggles suggest that he could fit in with a kind of ?Oktober Guard?s Battleforce 2000? unit or sub-unit as well. Another thing I like is that he?s distinctive enough to be an individual but could also work as a kind of Soviet high tech greenshirt. That kind of flexibility is nice design achievement I think, and also one that would win the heart of any self-respecting 80s Soviet strategist; CF Su-27 Flanker and MiG-29 Fulcrum. His biography is very interesting in that it poses the question of what the internal OkG dynamics are like and what the story behind his imprisonment was. The reluctant defector idea adds some interesting emotional weight to his choice, and builds on the trope of Russia being a profoundly sad place in a useful way too. I?m kind of reminded of the character of Ivanova in Babylon 5, though her reasons are different. As far as the visuals, it?s an interesting departure that the pops of color have a center of gravity that is in the lower torso, because of the knee pads being the largest bright color areas and the brightest. I can just imagine some ambitious Stavka official proposing that such a thing would be most suitable for the Soviet armed forces on the ground that their spirit and character are much closer to the earth and the common man than the Yankee pig-dog capitalist elitists, and then an actual Soviet soldier also deciding that it?s good in the field because mud, brush, and uneven terrain will tend to obscure those foolish colors better if they?re lower. I also like the way you have orange goggles to somewhat make a color spectrum with the red star/belt buckle/wristbands and brighter pads. That mix is cool and makes for good balance I think. Since the rifle would likely be molded in a single color, I?m curious what you?d pick to mold it in. And then continuing on the accessories, it looks to me like you chose a 74, based on the muzzle brake. Is that right? I also assume he might have a backpack and/or some other accessories; my opinion is that he?d look really cool with a closely replicated AT-3 Sagger (Malyutka) anti-tank missile, particularly the early look shown below. I realize that there are more modern alternatives like the -4, -5, and Kornet, as well as that the Snow Serpent came with a somewhat similar system. But I think a real Sagger, backpack/launchpad, and some kind of backpack-carryable sighting system would be great with this guy. What do you think? |

Ah yes, one other comment I wanted to add on Vikhr was that I would strongly consider making those leg pouches store AK mags. Otherwise he is gonna run short of ammo quickly, especially if he is carrying a Sagger rather than a backpack with more ammo.
Replies to all other designs incrementally over next couple days, promise! |

Yeah, Runback's a lady. I was thinking about what would be good parts for customizing as I worked on these, and I thought a more winter suited jacket torso for women was something missing from the vintage and repaint era parts library. I wanted to use a more modern cut, so I went with a PCU jacket. It, and derivatives of it also seemed pretty popular in the Japanese mil-sim airsoft scene which was also a little bit of an inspiration for her.

D’oh, so sorry!
Added him to the list. I may need to re-watch the movie before finishing with comments, but I think it’s a cool idea. Maybe ideally there’d be your ex-ARVN and then an ex-Montagnard as well, though not in the same wave. If the ARVN guy is in camo like Stalker’s, maybe a Montagnard would be in tiger stripes like Falcon. Maybe some “Malayan Emergency” style troops would be interesting too. But to return to Tiger specifically, I like the idea of circling back to the early team and adding in a character who would help round out that team, as well as potentially add to the history and sense of personal connections among its members, stretching back to SEA. Have you imagined him as someone who knew any later-to-be-Joes back in the day? I like that you explained how he made it out — that was my first question when I saw ARVN up top in the description. Have to assume it was the close connection with US personnel that got him the ride to a hospital that far away. Maybe a pretty serious injury too, if he left while US forces were still there and hadn’t returned by the time of the fall. I’m reminded of Hama’s story about Colton and his Washington visit, even though all the details are different. Snake Eyes more than once too. I feel like on a purely visual basis, adding another soldier in “lizard camo” would be beneficial to the overall look of the team too. Having one camo guy alone was always a little awkward imo, even though Stalker’s very cool look made that a very worthwhile tradeoff as opposed to having zero. Tiger is a good name. Does it relate to the movie, or a story idea you have for him? Like I said, I’m thinking I may need to rewatch… Last edited by books; 06-03-2022 at 03:19 PM.. |
