Just saw a new commercial last night during The Proof Is Out There on The History Channel. It started off showing the original 12" 60s Joes and then it showed some guy in an office holding what looked like the 1980s version 2 3.75" o-ring General Hawk. So it looks like they will be covering the 1980s Joes. Can't wait.

I am thinking it will focus the 1960?s 12 inch Joes. As well as the Adventure figures as well. The 3.75 might get a bit of a mention.

Watched a few episodes of the food that built America, and really enjoyed it.

I thought the episode was pretty good. It is more about the history of both Mattel and Hasbro. Which of course then Barbie and G.I. Joe are at the very center of that and these companies would not be around today without those properties. So it heavily focused on G.I. Joe. Also, this is the reason why I say Hasbro really needs to treat G.I. Joe like the icon it is that made their company.
I have not watched the Netflix Toys That Made Us in a long time so I am having trouble comparing the two. There were some real interesting gems in this History Channel show though. The one about how when G.I. Joe first came out Hassenfeld made all his sales reps buy up all the G.I. Joe product in all the Woolworths in New York, thus spurring a reorder, and talk amongst retailers saying how hot, popular, and in demand G.I. Joe was. Got me thinking could they have done that move again with Classified last year? LOL! I did not know there was an 8" "Super Joe" in the late 70s that failed to catch on. The Flubber story is just hilarious and I think I now have an idea what happened to Cookie Monster. LOL! It was a really good show and worth the time to check out and watch it. |

They Toys That Made Us, I thought, was better. This series does a number of toys lines in one episode vs the Netflix one that devotes an entire episode to one line. Both the Star Wars and GI Joe episode were GREAT.

I have not watched the entire episode. I just fast-forwarded to the part about the 1980s G.I. Joe relaunch, which doesn't come up until the very end. I saw the re-enactment of the Hasbro pitch meeting, which would have taken place around 1980-81 at the latest. When the guy doing the pitch hands the exec a fully painted production Hawk v2 figure from 1986, I yelled "F--- this!" at the screen.

Yea and difference today is that a toy sells out at retail, the retailer typically just shrugs. Unlike back in the day they would be begging for product and filling an entire aisle for one product line.
