I do applaud the attempts at preventing the old switcheroo, but I question whether or not there isn't a better solution than the "key in the back" thing- the printed numbers were already bad enough.
As far as the environmental impact angle, I also applaud that. I'm not going to waste my time debating that with those that choose to bury their heads in the sand, because we all know that's futile, I'm not going to change any minds. I will leave you with this, though, as well as a simple question: How many Hasbro package elements do you think are pictured below? I don't want to waste my time doing a Google Image search on that photo but if I had to bet money I would bet it was taken off the coast of China. Even if it was not but taken elsewhere in the Pacific I would still bet that shit has Chinese characters on it. I just watched a show that had these environmental people on it and they flat out said that they have traveled the globe and the places that have crap in the water like that is China and Africa. Not the United States. Hasbro can eliminate all the plastic they want. Hell they can close their entire business. It will not make a single dent into the amount of shit pollution China dumps into the ocean. The entire U.S. can go green shit crazy and we can all walk, ride bicycles, eat tofu, never travel anywhere, pay some new taxes, sit in the dark half of the day, and it still won't help one fucking bit because other countries like China, India, and rich assholes who are scamming you about all this will continue on like they always have. Polluting like they always have, driving gas powered vehicles, and flying gas powered private jets. We will all just be the suckers living a way worse life while no one else does. And none of their "solutions" will do a darn thing to help the environment. But they sure as shit will laugh at us, especially the "believers," all the way to the bank. I don't think anyone here caught why Hasbro is doing this locking mechanism thing. I think I am reading this right:
Quote:
"...to prevent rampant toy tampering due to Hasbro?s new eco-friendly packaging with plastic-less open windows."
Also, what about accessories? How are they strapped down in an open box? Again, like eliminating plastic bubbles or trays will do a darn thing to help. Collectors now either keep them or recycle them to begin with. Toy packaging is not the problem with the environment. |

So in some vain attempt to help the environment, the new packaging is basically going to be a figure strapped down to a piece of cardboard? Since there will be no plastic involved and they still want you to see the figure, the figure is just going to be hanging out there with nothing to protect it? We are going to get totally damaged figures. In stores and especially when they ship to our houses. Also, this will make stealing easier. Instead of returning switched out figures, which people could still do with this new mechanism I bet despite their claims, people will probably just rip the figures off of the cardboard backing right there in the store. You won't even have to open anything.

I’m guessing toy repacking shrink is minor to big box stores. Cost of doing business. I could be wrong but they likely off put some of that loss on the manufacturer which is why Hasbro makes changes.
The cynic in me also thinks Hasbro plays lip service to the environment and other issues. That’s about perception. They want to reduce costs and justify it. Less packaging means lower cost as well. Which is good for environment but better for their bottom line.....oh and tampering too (I guess). Just my two cents. All it’s worth. |

Wal-Mart was primarily responsible for PC software transitioning from GIANT HUGE BOXES to mostly CD jewel boxes and (later) DVD cases.
In that case (yeah sure, why not, pun intended), Wal-Mart's desire was to get more product on the shelf at once. Those boxes took up so much dang space! Being able to claim "this is a net asset to the environment" was a nice bonus, but had zero impact on the actual decision, which was financial. A quick anecdote to suggest that, irrespective of claims, environmental reasons rarely, if ever, supercede financial reasons when it comes to corporate decisions. I don't think our toys are the exception to that rule.

So they are raising the cost per figure, adding the shittiest packaging possible, and ruining the figures with removable back/butt plugs? What could go wrong.

We all need to step back and take a deep breath. The original post only was mentioning a patent filing. Doesn't mean that this is going to show up anytime soon. I don't see them changing packaging of a line midstream.

It's completely stupid. It will not do a thing the deter stealing the figure. And if the figure can be opened and the tab slid out what's to stop some dipshit from just replacing the figure with another? It's not the like employees even look or care! That's what stores need to do. Require employees to actually LOOK at the figure in the box. As we've often discussed, typically repacks are comically obvious.

Are you guys also getting the same idea I am from that "plastic-less OPEN window" part? They are having to switch to this back mechanism because there will be nothing else securing the figure. It's just going to be an open box. So does that mean the figure will just be strapped down to a cardback via this new back mechanism and it will just be hanging out there with nothing to protect it? How are they securing accessories? I am betting we will get damaged figures with this. This reminded me of Folio Society. I've been collecting the James Bond book set from them for the past few years. The books always came shrink wrapped in plastic. This year they got rid of that and changed to this thin paper that does not wrap all around the book. They then use this rough and heavy paper as padding in the box. When I opened one of the boxes this thin paper wrap ripped completely off in shipping and then the book rubbed up against the rough padding and it ripped up the cover of the book. When I contacted them the guy admitted their new packaging sucks but there is nothing they are going change because the environment. They at least sent me another book right away for free. It's like they know what they're doing isn't good but whatever. Is paper really cheaper than plastic wrap or is this just for PR? Plus, I bet I am not the only one whose book got damaged in shipping with their new shitty packaging. They would rather eat the cost of replacing damaged products than get yelled at on Twitter for plastic wrap and bubble wrap ? |
