Stating the obvious, but people collect for different reasons. I personally see very little allurer in buying classic o-ring Joes or the MOTU Origins. Some of this might be because I still have my childhood versions of those lines, but even if I didn't I don't think I would want them. The exception being I might get a Whale or Hydrofoil because I never owned those vehicles and I wouldn't mind having one to display. I find the figure sculpts to be dated and that make display less appealing for me. Yes they have some nostalgia for me but they are kind of like old video games there are better more modern versions out there IMO.
I mostly collect for display and customizing and the Classified and Masterverse lines are relatively affordable compared to say something like Hot Toys and I prefer 1/12 scale, and I am getting better looking figures that still have a sentimental connection for me compared to buying o-rings or Origins. I am not sure what the make up is of the collecting community and there are probably people that are collecting/would collect both lines, but Mattel and Hasbro are obviously seeing enough success with the larger scale more modern sculpts to keep investing in those lines. I also wonder how much of the Origins success is the fact you haven't had something as close to the original line released like this since the original line came out? I know ME and o-ring aren't the same but in my eyes they are close enough and I filled in some vehicles and figures I wanted during that period, and I am guessing others did the same so there is less pent-up demand in that smaller/original scale for Joes. |

I got sidetracked by your name, which reminded me of the film, which reminded me of Joe Morton, which reminded me that he would make a fantastic Doc. Never really got into Masters past the cartoon and a few of the figures. Trap-Jaw and Ram-Man were cool. Still like to watch the movie...

Morbid curiosity here. How did your childhood Joe's survive puberty? One day I took a look at my toys and felt like toys were for children and that is was high time I literally put childish things away. That next day I ended up giving all of my Joes, TF's, etc. to my buddies who still played with them... the rotten Philistines that they were. LOL Anyway, I was getting into girls and finding other interests and toys just seemed so passe'. So... how did you overcome that dreaded hump? The other being parents who throw out/garage sale childhood toys before the person is able to rescue them. Mine were obviously self-rejected so I didn't have to deal with that. But boy do I miss those childhood Joe's! I was so incredibly ginger and careful with my toys that other than replacing o-rings they would likely have been perfectly fine even today.
I stopped playing very late with toys... but by the time I entered high school I barely played at all, just a few times here and there, and the last time I played for real I believe was when I was 16. Then I entered a period where I cared nothing for toys for a good number of years, with rare exceptions here and there. And then, a couple of years ago, my interest was revived, and here I am. |

This might sound a little bit silly, but growing up, I didn't want to get rid of my toys. I asked my parents not to get rid of my toys, I told them I wanted them for my children. I helped storing them in boxes and they just stayed on my room, even when I moved out of my parents house. They have kept them, almost all of them at least, throwing out only those who got damaged by mold or something. My Joes are intact, and I still have almost 100% of their equipment with a few exceptions. I brought them back with me the last time I visited my parents.

I gave my 100% complete Terrordrome to a young neighbor kid. He was a nice kid. I had babysat him a couple of times...but it's still my biggest "toy regret".

Mostly luck. My parents didn't throw anything away. When GI Joe became my thing the MOTU went in a rubbermaid container in the basement. Same thing happened with the Joes when I was ~8th grade and I wasn't really playing with them. Some of the bigger stuff like Rolling Thunder and the Tomahawk stayed on the shelves because of their size and were display pieces. They didn't move from my childhood home until I was in my 30s and by that time I had my own house and family, and when they moved I brought all my toys, cards and comics back to my house. I got rid of a lot of stuff like Matchbox, TMNT, old nerf guns, Dick Tracy (regret that one), Ghostbusters, Marvel, but I wanted my kids to experience MOTU and Joe so I kept all that stuff. They never really got into MOTU or Joes, interestingly enough they seemed to enjoy my old Micro Machines the most. Going through my stuff and trying to get my kids interested rekindled my love of toys and when Classified started I saw it as an opportunity to get into a line at the start that was different and exciting enough for me to really be into it. Joes will always be my favorite toyline, but I like the fantasy/quirky designs of MOTU as well.
I finally pivoted my thinking re: Joe collecting and now don't part with hardly anything. I have an entire bin full of ReAction, OG and 25th/50th stuff that I'm just sitting on for the proverbial rainy day. No way am I going to sell it all off and then want it again down the road. A hundred times burned, but it's finally stuck in my pea brain. I find the 'saving them for my eventual kids' thing interesting. I've tried many times with both my daughter and son to get them into the things I liked as a kid- as fortunately much of it is still around in some form thanks to everything retro being popular these days- but it's a tough sell. With kids it always has to be an organically developed choice, just as it was for me getting into ARAH Joes in grade school. Right now my son who is 5, well he's kind of into a lot of different things. My daughter is 22 and not really all that into toys, so that ship has sailed, but I still hold out hope that someone- perhaps out of a sense of remembering dear old Dad if nothing else- will show an interest. Thanks for responding. I was just curious how you managed it. I wish I had your forward thinking perspective back then. Again I was perhaps trying too hard to grow up when I should have thought I was actually saving them for something. This has plagued my life though as a collector- unwilling to think too far ahead. I've bought and sold several decent collections over the decades and always seem to part with stuff w/out really thinking through how likely it will be that I'll just want them again down the road.

I?d love to see a ME figure that wasn?t a long limbed, gangly, anorexic hunchback. That?s side stepping that a lot of them struggle to hold their weapons and/or excessive gear. Do you have any counter examples?
