I do of course agree- but I'd selfishly rather have the NF version, as I already have the '84;)!

Unicron extending because it wouldn't hit the goal, to my knowledge, is total myth.
When the time extension was added in, the affiliate orders were not yet added. In fact the actual story is that even if it did not get the time extension, that it would've still made it's backer goal. Transformers fans getting a serious, hard case of FOMO was real here. People did not want to miss out on the Alpha and Omega of Unicron toys. The speculation among the Transformers community is that so many people wanted it, but the price was crazy for it. Indeed, at nearly 570 dollars it's hands down the most expensive Transformers item Hasbro has ever done. There were two time extensions...not because that it wouldn't back...but rather Hasbro acquiesced to grumblings among the Transformers fandom to cough up such huge funds in a relatively short time. Remember total backer count was 8000 units. It was already going to fund before the first time extension. The two time extensions meant that so many more people got in on it. Before Hasbro turned it into "10,000+" backers the final count was something like 15,000 or something like that if I remember. To answer your second question...as of now the time extensions on Unicron have been the sole exception. I think it was just due to the unique circumstance of Unicron being the most expensive item on Haslab this far. Also consider that Transformers is one of Hasbro's biggest and baddest brands. They wanted the first ever Transformers Haslab to be a big fucking deal. Giving time extensions for such an iconic baddie was logical, thinking about it, so that as many fans could scrounge up the funds and partake in it as possible. I'm glad I did. Just LOOK at the damn thing. It's crazy awesome! To say that what is clearly in plain sight and the company's own press releases is a "myth" and - in the same post - weave a tale that rests on a mountain of assumptions, including again with the assumption that affiliates are added at the last minute, something that is staggeringly contrary to all business reason)...whew. That sure is something. the amount of information plainly available that we have to dismiss, and the number of assumptions we have to put full faith in - in order to believe this fantastical fiction of Transformers fans waiting for one or two more paydays - just jaw-dropping in the leaps of logic requested of anyone reading it. Really.

FOMO. Can we please stop talking in code that I need to Google to figure out what it means. When did everyone just stop writing full sentences?

With all the respect I can possibly muster, google shows ample examples of there being 5400/8000 orders as the original deadline approached, and Hasbro's own PR saying about the extension: "We want to make this dream item a reality just as much as you and feel that this extension will help get us to the 8,000 backer goal!"

Really. Hasbro was being very transparent with us. They said, and people who actually worked in affiliates who took orders, assured us that affiliate orders weren't added in until the last stretch. You bet that people who didn't order from Pulse...namely international orders, were very curious whether or not their purchases actually counted towards, since they didn't show up real time...and Hasbro said yes. It was with Unicron that we got confirmation from Hasbro that affiliates were added more or less last minute. Again, your first Haslab. But this "affiliates in last stretch" has happened time and time again. Unicron. Sentinel. Victory Saber. The affiliate orders alone for Victory Saver was THOUSANDS almost overnight. It went from not sure if we'd get the last stretch to smashing the last stretch. I'm not sure if Galactus was sold outside of Pulse but if he was then you'll be sure that he had affiliate orders added in last minute. Victory Saber had a huge draw in Asia where the character was created. So there was a metric fuck-ton of Takara-Tomy and Hasbro Asia orders that were always waiting in the wings to be added to the overall tally. You make it seem that Unicron was destined to fail but in reality it never was. It was always going to be back. Consider how big and "powerful" the Transformers fandom really is. It's a monstrous brand with a huge fanbase stretching every part of the globe. It's first Haslab was a shining crown badguy of a cult favorite movie. In the wider fiction Unicron is one of the "old gods" of the Transformers universe, one of the progenitor gods, or someone coming after the 13 Primes, if you want even more extended Transformers fiction. Again, I was there at ground zero, from day one. The hype was real, the desire was real. To suggest that somehow it needed some kind of extension to back is ridiculous. I mean, we backed to completion a semi-obscure Japanese only character, who's only American fiction that he ever popped up in was a much hated IDW take that only served to turn the fandom AGAINST Star Saber. Yet he funded with flying colors without the need of an extension. A character that western fans were conditioned to hate, more loved by Japanese fans than American fans backing..is more believable than a primordial god entity that is practically part of every Transformers fiction now? THAT I find it very hard to believe and more dismissing of the Transformers fandom than actually trying to understand how big of an event Unicron really was for us. For all of us kids who Transformers was a cornerstone, to finally have a truly huge, accurate, and impressive Unicron to tower over even the largest Transformers toys(Unicron can look down on the previous largest Transformers ever), was really Hasbro showing just how much they wanted to cater to that one collector want that has always existed since Transformers fans learned of the cancelled G1 Unicron. I'm certain that you're already trying to interpret Hasbro's statement on it that it was failing. I think based upon all the things I DO know about the Transformers fandom, it's size and health, that it actually was a good faith decision by Hasbro. Price was a HUGE(haha!) concern for many people, and many of us in the TF community felt it was a good faith effort to let as many people get in as possible. For many the extention did allow for one more paycheck to dump into. 570 is a hell of a lot for a Haslab, much less a Transformers item. |

I think this is what the English language will officially become. If we travel 200 years into the future people will be speaking in nothing but acronyms and have no idea what past words they once represented.

FOMO isn't even anything new. The idea of it was coined in 1996, and 8 years later the first use of the acronym FOMO would appear in a business article in the NYT.

Are you saying you work(ed) for Hasbro or simply that you were a part of the community at the time the HasLab was active?
