GI Joe ARAH will never reach the heights of the 80’s without a super successful major media push...ala Marvel. Marvel went from bankruptcy in the 90’s to billions. Marvel’s biggest asset wasn’t current artists, writers and printing presses. It was the incredible library of stories and characters. Once someone got a hold of them and figured out how to use them properly with a new medium, they took off again bigger then ever.
Now I’m not saying GI Joe can or will be Marvel. But I am saying don’t discount the past stories and library of characters that ARAH Joe has. That’s where their real value comes from. They are good stories and characters and could be used successfully with a new medium in the right hands. This is NOT a post saying “it has to stay the same.” Just saying you shouldn’t throw the baby out with the bath water. |

I agree with what Mainframe77 wrote. Marvel invested in Marvel with the first Iron-Man film, but they co-made/authorized a lot of movies that audiences didn't agree on (regardless of being comic book fans or not). It took a couple of Punisher movies, a couple of Fantastic Four movies, multiple X-Men movies, a Daredevil movie, an Elektra movie, 3 Spidey movies, a Hulk movie, a Blade trilogy, and let us not forget a certain Duck named Howard, among others, before Marvel found their remarkable stride in Iron-Man.
Meanwhile, DC has a renowned movie studio in its own backyard and struggles to create an equal powerhouse. Three lackluster live-action Joe films, # Power Rangers movies, JEM, and # Transformers films might represent the necessary learning curve for Hasbro to decide to make themselves the next Marvel of Hollywood. Not all ARAH elements can move forward, but any property "in name only" misrepresents the legacy that makes it worthy of a film franchise in the first place. Iron-Man was lightning in a bottle, even compared to its sequels, but the long-term benefits of Marvel's investment redefined Hollywood. It would be great to see more iconic properties enjoy that kind of success and second, third, or fourth life for fans of all ages even if one fan doesn't enjoy every film. |

Anyway, am I the only one trippin' off of the fact that Hasbro is looking for somebody "with their ear to the street," to work for free and give the company ideas on how to market G.I. JOE when they fired the very people, (shout out to Bobby Vala and The Honcho, Mark Weber,) who could have given them the very insightful that they're now looking for?
Weber oversaw the making of some of the best and coolest GI Joe figures there have ever been (and adult collectors generally seem to agree that the PoC-35th/Renegades era is pretty top notch, with a few highlights in the later dwindling stuff), but if good, high-quality figures were all that was needed to hook in new generations GI Joe would never have gone on hiatus. Outside of some wonky sculpts in the 'aughts GI Joe has rarely lacked for quality toys. |
