This but add artwork. I have an almost complete set early 2000s Star Wars Roleplaying game sourcebooks because I thought the art looked great.

So a couple things gleaned from conversations I've seen here, there and elsewhere:
1. The "official" setting of the game is the Classified continuity (which makes sense given it's Hasbro's current continuity), and supposedly Hasbro has given them not-yet-seen by the public material to help flesh things out. 2. However, the system is definitely flexible enough that if you want to replicate "ARAH" you should have no problems, and may not even really need to convert much as far as established character stats. 3. It does, however, sound like "military realism" is not really a priority as far as the system/setting is concerned, though in truth a lot of that can be handled more by the atmosphere set by the game-runner and their players than the math on the character sheet. 4. The system sounds like it has some depth to it. Maybe not super-crunchy, but not as "rules lite" as games based on "kids properties" often end up being. I think the folks writing these games are aware of who the core demographics of the fans for the franchise are (and in many cases are probably fans themselves). Either way, just placed my preorder for the first few bits (Deluxe Core Book, GM Screen/Adventure, and Dice). Dunno if I'll ever convince anyone to play along, but if nothing else it'll be a fun little GI Joe oddity for the overall collection. Last edited by Jmacq1; 08-29-2021 at 10:12 AM.. |

The Crimson Guard art is encouraging if that's the Classified design.
Same goes for Shipwreck.

I dunno, the non-Classified characters (the ones without toys) seem rather plain- if true to form- than the others. I am curious to see what, if anything, this means.

I love the idea of Joe tabletop. I’d love to run a bunch of different style games. From typical military adventurism with a squad of fresh Cobra Blueshirts starting from the bottom being sent on crazy missions to further Cobra’s goals. A horror style game where a squad of Greenshirts is stuck on duty in The Pit over a long weekend and a captured BAT is remotely brought on line and is attempting to hunt them all down and they have to try to survive the weekend, keep the BAT from destroying The Pit and hopefully learn the source of the signal it’s being controlled by and reporting too. Or a taught spy style thriller where you’re a small squad of CGs sent in undercover in a gated community full of government service types, contractors and bureaucrats and you’ve got to position yourselves to further Cobras interests without getting caught.

I received my free PDF and my hardcover RPG book today.
It's a huge book, easily bigger than the average Pathfinder DnD book. I haven't looked through much of it yet, but the art is a mix of Classified, comic, and other designs (with a tilt toward the original wave 1 Classified designs). That's disappointing, but to be expected. There are minibios for tons of Joes at the very beginning.

So being a big fan of GI Joe and a big fan of tabletop RPGs, here's my nutshell review based on something in-between skimming and in-depth read:
This is a really strong effort. If anyone was worried that it might be some half-assed licensed property cash grab...fear not. I was surprised at how detailed things were, and it is not in any real way a "kiddie" game. They seem to have created their own "universe" for this particular branch of ARAH that incorporates characters and tidbits from nearly every ARAH-style incarnation their Joe roster is about 80 characters that run the gamut from "core character" mainstays to IDW characters and nearly everything in between, and they have a nice blurb at the end explaining their rationale and noting that if a particular Joe (or Cobra) isn't listed here that doesn't mean they might not show up in a future book. They've also provided some tweaks and details about the team and characters that make sense and help "fill in the gaps" on certain things. Either way, there were some surprising names on the "initial roster" and they try to explain some of the "unrealistic" quirks of GI Joe in ways that make sense. There's a hefty roster of characters and vehicles. Certainly not by any means "complete" but most of the highlights are there, and as noted if the game is successful we'll likely see more in future supplements. As noted, the art borrows from various eras of Joe with a slight lean towards Classified and modern-era (POC onward) incarnations. Though there are nods to Sunbow and the comics in various places too. There's even at least one nod to the GI Joe Collector's Club (or a character that was only offered through them at least) amidst the artwork. It's pretty clear that the folks who made this are big Joe fans. They get into some pretty deep cuts and overall the property is treated with a ton of respect. I haven't had any opportunity to actually playtest it yet, but even if you have no intention of playing the game I don't think this book would be a bad purchase for any reasonably hardcore Joe fan. It's a quality product and as RPG books go it's a very good start for a game line. It's definitely made me interested in possibly picking up their Transformers game as well. |

Yea this isn't "classified", they kind of take from everything and also note on the roster of characters as mix of things from everything including stuff like Image, DDP, IDW, Spytroops, and so on.
Lot of things are just clearly vague cause they can be. Cobra Commander is always the same, Cobra, the Joes, the Pitt, but they don't go into like continuity story details that set it in any particular setting as most GI Joe settings all shared universal ideas. |

I would note the overall tone is "take the material seriously" but not "grim and gritty." I'd place it pretty firmly in Hama-esque territory.
