The #1 movie this weekend only brought in $16.8 million. These numbers are all nothing compared to the numbers two years ago, so it's obvious COVID is still the blame. So "bombs" have to be evaluated carefully with all of that in mind.
Although that's not to say that this movie would have been a guaranteed smash hit if everything was open everywhere and normal, it's just to say that right now it is still a really bad time to release a movie. Covid will be the excuse for every Hollywood failure. When "Ghostbusters Afterlife" shatters the box office, Covid won't be mentioned. |

For a very smart guy who knows how to make a ton of money for himself, Lorenzo is such a hack when it comes to taste.

You clearly don't know anything about the film business. American movie attendance has been on a steady decline that started long before COVID. The only reason Hollywood continued to boast of big profits was by continually escalating ticket prices to compensate for the dropoff.
In recent years, most big-budget Hollywood tentpole movies make more money from the international box office than domestic. Especially China, which is a huge market with movie attendance rates much stronger than America. Given how expensive they are to make, to distribute, and to market, movies like this can no longer be profitable without international appeal. And as much as you may not want to believe it, the "MURICA FOREVER, MUTHERF***ERS!!!" attitude is extremely unappealing to just about everyone else in the world. Every time I see cuban disidents, for example, waving Amereican flags as they protest for their own freedom, I'm reminded how much the people of the world just hate the ideals of America and her symbols. *Eyes Roll.* |

Yes, if a product is good enough, political agendas fall into the background behind character and story.
Hell, one of my favorite "action" films is "The Wages Of Fear." It literally has an anti-free market/pro communist message. Nothing I support. But you have to put those elements together in your mind in order to see them. It's thought provoking, and a terrific film, regardless of those ideas. "Get woke, go broke" is not just "cute," it's accurate. It describes productions that make little effort developing characters or story, and sometimes completely ignoring what came before in terms of a franchise, in favor of making every element a lazy stand-in for a political message. See Disney Star Wars for a great example. Completely leveled franchise. I will show myself out. Last edited by mikedanger; 07-28-2021 at 12:59 PM.. Reason: Add quote |

Yeah, I looked at her IMDB, Kennedy hasn't really been involved in anything great since she was a producer on the Sixth Sense back in 99. Looking at it, her best days have been behind her for a couple of decades now. She's had a couple of good things since she took over Star Wars like Episode 7 and the Mandalorian but most of the stuff she's been involved with hasn't been setting any records.

It's Star Wars. Of course it made money but each consecutive movie of that trilogy made less than the one prior. Now, I'm sure there are a lot of reasons for that but if enough people feel the way Hank does, then the "go woke, go broke" mindset could play a part in that decline.

Maybe I am misunderstanding but I thought Hank mention Star Wars a balanced example. I would use Falcon and Winter Soldier as an unbalanced one. I'm not a guy that cares about social justice issues in my entertainment, but they laid it on incredibly thick on that one, without much of a story to back it up IMO.
