So now that its out on digital I went and checked out the pirate sites and this movie has about 2 dozen active torrents, with tons of seeders, about equal to what I've seen on a DC or Marvel movie. So there are a bunch of people out there who are willing to watch it for free. Hopefully that means it'll do well on whatever streaming service gets it eventually and Hasbro gets more money and more eyes to be able to make more toys.
It's like the brand has value and people DO enjoy the films, but it doesn't have the cachet to bring people out to theaters to watch it. I've said it on other forums, but to me, GI Joe was always strongest when it was just the "workman brand", a solid mid-tier brand that might not hit the stratosphere of more fantastical lines like Transformers, Power Rangers and My Little Pony...but capable of its own, sustainable, niche. In some respects, I think the movies reflect that.

I bought it via iTunes. Why not support the franchise, instead of wasting my breath complaining and pirating (and then later complaining that there are no plans for another film in the series)?
The improvements we've seen to the Classified series of figures were because Hasbro listened to consumers *and* there was demonstrated interest/demand in the line.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/G.I._Joe:_Resolute did it better.
While it was a darker storyline, it did some fairly good things that I'd like to see more of. I'd say that watching the Snake Eyes / Storm Shadow act in that cartoon told the origin of the ninja storyline well enough. There was no need for this movie, especially since it was such shite. Que sera... If they would just take a more adult tone like Resolute did and tell the stories from the comics, starting at issue one, they would probably own the spotlight again. It's too bad the corporate C-level folks can't see beyond the cheese, weak minded, no-soul, gutless, dribble hacks that the HR department hired to run their product lines. o.O

I watched the movie 2 times today and I bought it on Prime Video. I enjoyed it and I do hope there will be a second movie even though the box office sales were so low. All moves are hurting from the pandemic sales wise though.

I am glad this movie bombed. I didnt expect much with a no name cast but Henry Golding should stick to playing chocolate boy romantic heroes. It was a disgrace watching him hem and haw the role of such an iconic character, hell the cartoon Snake Eyes showed more emotion than him...and wtf is the plot, so illogical and dumb. Wish I could explain more but I dont want to spoil it for the majority that skipped the theater release!

Another bad sign that this was out so fast on steaming and on demand services. I read a bunch of places this was supposed be exclusively in theaters for at least 45 days before hitting other places. It has only been out 25 days. It looks to still be in about 1,000 theaters. It sheds about 1,000 theaters each week. I wonder if it will still be in theaters come this Friday? It has only made $35M worldwide as of the day of this posting. The next interesting thing to see how quickly it goes down in price on the streaming services. It is $19.99 on my on demand service. I've noticed that new movies start at that price and then some drop to $5.99 quicker than others. Some stay at $20 for months and others drop to $6 in a few weeks.
I am still expecting some fall out from this financial loss. I wonder when and what form it will take? |

I think the fallout will be that studios simply won't be willing to spend upwards of $100 million on movies anymore.
In my opinion, that's not a bad thing. They spent a fortune on this movie but couldn't be bothered to write decent dialogue or come up with something even remotely original or new. Magic rocks? Giant snakes in a dungeon like we saw in Harry Potter 20 years ago? The old 1980s ninja movies were made on shoestring budgets and are infinitely more re-watchable than this shiny, glossy turd. It would appear that Americans are either too scared to go back to movie theaters or maybe the year and a half of watching everything in the comfort of their homes made them realize the "cinematic experience" isn't worth it any more. If Hollywood studios have to rely 100% on Chinese audiences for box office revenue, expect to see movies get even dumber, louder, and with more explosions. That's not a pretty picture. |
