This movie made 13 million its opening weekend and his headed to the dung heap where it belongs. Don’t blame the pandemic. Godzilla vs Kong made 400 million world wide and at least will earn a profit. Snake Eyes will drop further in the following weeks and will be a financial flop. Hopefully this kills this cinematic continuity and years down the road Gi Joe will get its own Christopher Nolan type savior.

I liked the movie overall having no expectations whatsoever. My takeaway from this movie was that it wasn't horrible. Thinking back to my absolute horror from the butchery of Rise of Cobra.
I agree that StormShadow stole the show and really liked Andrew Koji's portrayal. The Macguffins and Deus ex Machina plot devices were safe and appropriate. The uniform for Snake Eyes would have been cool, but I would have liked them to take a page out of Christopher Nolan's book and do a little more Ra's Ah Ghul training and see Snake Eyes pull a little more Batman disappearing stunts. Its too bad they made only 13 million. Its going to be really hard to break a 100 at that rate. As tough as this line has been to collect, when all the dust settled, I ended up with a healthy army of Troopers, Infantry and Vipers. Got Barbecue on preorder, Timber on preorder and missed out on Breaker so I will have to hunt for him. GI joe has been good this year. |

"...it would never work for a film franchise as it has zero international appeal. 80s era style gungo ho America soldier guys saving the world, it's something of a joke to the rest of the world, why stuff of the likes of Team America lampooned the macho US action movies of old..."

I also want to add that there's a pervasive "Manbaby Mentality" when talking about films like Snake Eyes.
No, it's NOT for you. It was NEVER intended for you. It was NEVER intended to be like ARAH or a replacement. What matters isn't that manbaby fans get into this movie...it's that the general audience gets into the movie and cares. The Transformers point is very much on the ball. As someone who is also a Transformers fan, I cannot even begin to tell you how much Transformers benefitted from movies that, were TOTAL SHIT, yet made big bucks at the box office. There's a reason why GI Joe fucking died twice during the timespan Transformers kept growing and growing. No one cared about GI Joe and we fans couldn't buy enough GI Joe to keep it alive. If it's only fans buying Classified, I'd wager in two years time the line will probably die again. It's unsustainable without new blood coming into the franchise. Fans like me will at least give Snake Eyes a chance. Hell, I gave all the Transformers movies a chance even if I knew they were almost all going to be hot garbage after Revenge of the Fallen. I'm mature enough to understand that this is merely just a different kind of GI Joe, not meant to be a replacement for the GI Joe I grew up with. **IF** this movie does well and we actually get a second one, GI Joe is certainly going to go places. As long as kids keep buying and turning into new fans, it's likely the brand will take the trajectory that Transformers did. |

On a separate topic, it will be interesting to see how the Disney Plus Book of Boba Fett series goes.
I see a lot of similarities with Snake Eyes in that Boba Fett had very little contribution to the Star Wars canon and yet his mysterious appearance made fans go wild. Granted Snake Eyes had more storyline, but he started out as an unpainted cost saving toy that grew into a crazy hysteria. My point being is that in order for the mythos to live in the 21st century, Snake Eyes will need to evolve. A guy that can't talk being the most popular character isn't going to cut it. To build a story behind that is going to need more depth and one of the compromises is that he can at least talk. |

Agreed…even if it appears to be the EXACT same movie as the first. I mean seriously, that trailer?!

GI Joe has none of this. Nostalgia sells and one of the biggest movie classics is being compared to a franchise that has had zero international presence? And really we don't know how Top Gun will do internationally, lot of nostalgia bomb films have came and went with poor performance at the BO, I'm sure it will do alright cause of the Cruise missile, course he's had multiple bombs already in his career. GI Joe doesn't have any nostalgia outside of primarily American men in their 40's and 50's. How do you start a franchise with a big budget film series when you are not a known property by majority of the world? Even in the US, the franchise has been on life support since the 90s. The comparisons don't even match up when you go back to the 80s as Marvel and company never pushed to sell toys, because they had no stake in the toy markets....As for the height of the GI Joe comics, it was not long lived, it was a huge hit for first couple years but sales dropped like a brick soon after....Also everyone knew of all these characters, even those who weren't fans, know who Captain America is even before the MCU came about. The comics and their legacies never went away, while GI Joe slowly died and became irrelevant.
The only question to ask is what did the Joe movies do wrong to squander this opportunity and turn away this built-in audience? It's very clear what they did wrong, they did not stay faithful enough to the source material. The tone was off, the costumes looked all wrong, and some of the most popular characters like CC were barely used at all. Instead they brought in guys like Joe Colton, who had nothing to do with the success of the '80s toys. And, secondly, they didn't hire good talent to make the films. Iron Man, Cap and Thor all had some experienced directors behind them, who had been in the biz for years and succeeded with similar movies (Rocketeer director for Cap, and Shakespearean drama director for Thor). The crazy thing is how with Snake-Eyes, they did not correct ANY of these mistakes after their past failures, and just doubled down on every mistake. Quote:
They don't do it? LOL. Except for Spider-Man, which probably has a lot to do with Sony still being involved in producing, MCU has stuck incredibly close to the source material. Even for Ant-Man, they re-used an obscure reboot plot of Ant-Man from the '70s or '80s comics (Scott Lang Ant-Man) that never even produced any hot-selling comics or had much of a fan base. They simply recognized that the writers at Marvel had GREAT CRAFT and creativity. There's no reason to write your own plot when you own the intellectual property of a thousand great plots already. The G.I. Joe filmmakers never understood that. You could simply rip the Serpentor plot and redo it as a movie, having terrorists trying to make a DNA super soldier, while the Joe team chases them around the world, teaming up with international contacts to fight them, and you'd have a million times better movie than what we got. |
