Critic Reviews are around 53% but regular fan reviews are coming in higher. I got tickets for tonight so I'll let you know what I think.

I think in the end the movie will do just fine cause they are playing it safe. Also they didn't spend a fortune on marketing, they basically only have been promoting the film for a month and a half. Unlike other big hollywood films which had almost a year of marketing put into them only to have covid shut them down and then having to restart new marketing campaigns. If they can get a strong opening weekend world wide, the film should be a success with that low of a budget Quote:
I really wonder what would happen if Paramount would actually just adapt Hama's comics stories. After three failures at re-inventing the story - you'd think they might want to try. Especially with how Marvel movies have done so well while sticking very close to the source material.
It might be too late now. I get the feeling this Snake Eyes movie will be the final nail in the coffin. I love GI Joe and Larry, but his stories and writing were never very good. We grew up with them, but really what in them is going to put buts in seats? What in those comics looks like and sounds like it would sell to modern audiences? And more importantly, how is those stories going to sell to international markets? A decent sized budget movie has to be a huge hit to do well in a US only release, cause war and military movies traditionally do poorly overseas when there is an US centric bias to them. And to succeed in big budget hollywood you need to strike it rich at the international level. GI Joe you grew up with the comics would be a dead dog in international markets which Paramount and Hasbro would not want. And really what kid is going to rush out to see war movie with goofy looking characters and bad guys? Last edited by PanzerKrake; 07-22-2021 at 03:02 PM.. |

Larry's stories were all better than this garbage.

Is this only going to theaters or will it have a "digital" release simultaneously, which seems like a surefire way to kill a movie's box office?

I do not like the Marvel comics at all, so I don't have a horse in the fight between comic purists and Origins, but I do think the ideal G.I. Joe movie for both fans and the studio probably tries to hew closer to the source material, ala the MCU, than radical, weird reboots, ala ROC.

There's an old "making of" documentary where George Lucas talks about looking at old adventure movies and going "Why don't they make movies like that anymore?" and deciding to make Raiders of the Lost Ark. Now, we all look at Raiders and we go "Why don't they make movies like that anymore?". A Sunbow style GI Joe movie could be a movie like that (Not exactly like that, but similar) and it would be awesome for everyone. Fans, casual moviegoers, etc. Literally everyone. |
