To me, Batman never quits, and Joker doesn't wear make-up to be the Clown Prince of Crime, he wears cover-up to appear "normal." That's what's prevented me from enjoying those versions (well, that and the general public's unhealthy obsession: "greatest performance evaaaaaar!"), and has kept Nicholson's portrayal - despite his portly physique - as the superior version.

Of course I think it's important to note that since BtAS's debut, with Conroy and Hamill's portrayals, those are the voices I hear in my head when reading the comics. Irrelevant to movie discussion, though.

Batman '89 is it's own beast, for sure. Elfman's score gets me every time.

I have the Adam West series on DVD. Yvonne Craig... *grrr*

I also prefer Nicholson to Ledger. That tongue thing Ledger did was bloody stupid. I think if he hadn't died, he probably wouldn't even have been nominated for an Oscar.

Of course, my definitive Joker is Mark Hamill's cartoon/video game version.

I agree on Ledger. I think it was the wall-to-wall media surrounding his death that not only made that film the phenom it was, but got him the Oscar nod for his bad Tom Waits impersonation...
