I don't see this linked and don't want to click on every page. Di Bonaventura Producer interview post-trailer release.
https://www.empireonline.com/movies/...ura-exclusive/ Important points/spoilers: 1. He will not go silent/get injured in this movie. They have that planned for movie 2, assuming they get movie 2. 2. This is not a "GI Joe" movie. It is a Snake Eyes/Storm Shadow origin story that lightly introduces GI Joe/Cobra; opening the door for movie 2, which would be a "GI Joe" movie. 3. Scarlett and Baroness will not be in the film much. Their presence reinforces the #2 approach. This feels like a Solo Star Wars Story scenario where the second movie's potential is perhaps more enticing than the first. To get the second the first must succeed, which Solo did not for a variety of reasons. What Marvel did with Iron Man 2008 was very risky, and as we've seen, it's often imitated but never successfully duplicated. |

Teasing a shared universe is only risky if you hold back your A-list stuff in hopes of using it in sequels (like making a Robin movie that teases Batman in sequels, but Robin fails and you never get to Batman). Hasbro clearly thinks Snake Eyes the character is bigger than GI Joe. So they are using him in their relaunch, and if it's successful, they will make GI Joe movies that are about the bigger team. But to them, the risk of universe seeding is minimal. They are already using their two biggest guns: Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes. There's no harm in trying to introduce a broader universe while focusing on making a great story (Iron Man) and building a great character (Downey as Stark). It makes movies more interesting even if there aren't other sequels. That being said, I'm pessimistic this movie will interest me (to me, Cobra Commander is the character bigger than GI Joe, but I'm glad they aren't doing CC movies; they'd never do them right). But the vitriol toward it in this thread based on trailers and obvious decisions (focusing on Snake Eyes, letting him talk, redoing a dated backstory) is weird.

Risky in what sense? They teased SHIELD and other heroes in Iron Man and then they built those threads out in a successful way. But Iron Man was the main hero they wanted to use and they used him. If Iron Man failed, it wasn't like the teasers in Iron Man were for better properties.

The risk would have been making an Ant-Man movie to set up an Iron Man movie, having Ant-Man flop, and then you never get to use the character you're most excited about. Iron Man didn't do that. And neither is Snake Eyes. The Dark Universe is the only one of these shared universe seeding films that maybe did that, but it's not like the Mummy is that much worse of a movie monster than some of the others they were talking about.

Agreed. The way SHIELD was hiding in plain sight was well-handled. I think IM2 suffered some bloat from universe-building but it wasn't a terrible film or a failure, for that matter.
I had high hopes for the Dark Universe and liked how they presented the creatures. Tom Cruise was the wrong choice. He needed to take the backseat to the monster, even if he was going to become their Van Helsing (a theory I read). Had they brought in a character seen in Dracula Untold, perhaps it could've caught its breath and leaned on "reaching back" instead of "overextending forward" in their long-term plans. Good thoughts, jscott. Quote:
The Iron Man movie was risky, I agree. But the decision to have Iron Man tease a larger film universe wasn't risky at all. They just threw some nods in it to other heroes and MU entities and it made the movie feel much cooler. It's not like they 'wasted' SHIELD and Fury by just having them in the background or brief scenes. Iron Man was the hero they wanted to feature and they featured him. If it had failed, they still took the shot they wanted (again, see my Robin and Batman example).

That's your opinion that those stories were saying that. I never got that from GI Joe at all. Not to mention, the GI Joe comics and cartoons were often ensembles with a diverse cast. So I'd say your reasoning is faulty and wrong.
Larry Hama has never expressed this anywhere. You are assuming this is the case. Hey if you don' want to watch the movie, thats up to you. I personally don't care if you watch it or not. I'm not saying people have to consume and support every part of the brand as a whole. I was expressing my support of another poster wanting to support the brand which I agreed with. I think the idea of making a shared universe at first you have to start small and test the waters and also build up said universe, which Marvel did amazingly well with. With the Universal monster movies and with DC you can't just rush into something and expect it to go well. Plant seeds and hopefully they blossom into a beautiful flower, but take it slow and see what happens. If that will happen with G.I. Joe only time will tell. It seems they are taking a measured approach to these topics which I find refreshing and nice on a personal level. Its strange how much insight you can glean into a person by their level of reaction to things. Personally I want the brand to do well, I want to see the figures made that I enjoyed as a kid into the Classified line and they've barely scratched that surface. It's nice to see the main line characters, but I grew up loving Spirit, Alley Vipers, Quick Kick, Tomax and Xamot, Stalker, Dial Tone, Wet Suit, Dusty, Storm Shadow, etc that I want to seem them make in the Classified line and/or the retro line. |
