Was the poster ever up for sale? I would have loved to get one but it was only available for a few hours on some online event?

Sounds like a threat, and not one I consider plausible in the slightest. There is no reason Super 7's line, for example, would go away just because the Snake-Eyes movie failed. They have a Thundercats line, and there is no Thundercats movie at all last I checked. Likewise, Hasbro seems happy with current Classified sales, which have nothing to do with the movie, and aren't going to drop even if no one currently buying Classified sees the movie.
Ultimately, Snake-Eyes still does not look like a movie that is appropriate for selling toys. It uses very few Joe characters, their costumes aren't colorful, and there is almost no focus on vehicles, especially ones with non-generic designs. You don't see toy lines being marketed for Mission: Impossible, Bourne or James Bond for the same reasons. Compare to something like Revenge of the Sith, one of the last live-action movies that truly excelled as a toy tie-in. George Lucas absolutely invented the idea of toy tie-in action movies with Star Wars. G.I. Joe in the '80s was built around aping his techniques. The whole artform and strategy has been completely misunderstood and mishandled with the G.I. Joe movies and the Disney Star Wars movies (which didn't even do the simple, basic move of giving the main characters significantly new costumes in each movie). So it actually would be much better for the brand if the Snake-Eyes movie failed. If this movie succeeds, it still won't sell toys, and they will make more movies like it, which will continue to be terrible at selling toys. If they can't get their own Kevin Feige, someone who grew up with the G.I. Joe brand and fully understands why it appealed to its fans, then they're better off not making movies. They had a good thing going earlier in the 2000s, and then completely killed the golden goose by making movies and tie-in toys for them that had no appeal for fans and rotted in the stores. Here, history repeats itself, as people are already showing no interest in the Snake-Eyes movie toys while continuing to buy up the toys with '80s-style designs. Problem with the Kevin Feige analogy, is that Marvel has always been relevant and popular so it has this universe and fandom to cater to. GI Joe's main fandom is from almost 40 years ago, it's outdated and by catering to that market most of the fans would be alienating current generations. Sorry but so many GI Joe fan ideas and expectations are so out of touch and would not do any better in current markets and for the most part are just wishful thinking by 50 year old men. Hasbro wants a new generation of fans, they need to reinvent GI Joe and attract new fresh eyes to it, which is something most old fans can't comprehend. A happy median needs to be struck that caters to the old fans as well as new. The way the are doing GI Joe feels like how they did Transformers. Hasbro has gone with multiple lines and multimedia projects to give old fans something, new fans their movies and tv shows, as well as shows that cater to the older fans as well. The toy lines for transformers are also designed this way, newer younger fans, mainline, and then specialty lines for the older fans of the originals. I think this is probably the idea for GI Joe as they try multiple projects, a cinematic universe, an upcoming cartoon, and different toy lines. All projects wont be for everyone, this is just like how lot of us Transformers fans hate most of the live action films and new cartoons, but we still get cool toys catered more towards us old fans. GI Joe seems to be going this route now too. And agree that the success of the movie will not kill the toy line, as long as the merch sells, and companies are especially buying the GI Joe license to produce product, it's making Hasbro money. |
