Exactly my thoughts any time they make a movie. Not that I'm a stickler for the Hama Source Material. But, unless it's going to be a BETTER story by deviating from it - what is the point? Everything is written. Adapt what exists. Seems like a no brainer.

Pretty WTF origin story compared to the original, wouldn't be hard to just update the war like they did with Iron Man. Regardless, I like the figures I've seen and I'm gonna check it out just for the martial arts action.

SPOILERS AHEAD! (Albeit very vague spoilers, actually.)
Kinda what I was expecting to hear/see: a near-total re-imagining of his origin story. (Only not an especially imaginative re-imagining, apparently.) PS "Magic stone"?! PPS "Storm Shadow's grandmother"?!

Hot take: Unfortunately, I dont think western audiences are going to go for this...or that Marvel kung fu series (for the same reasons).

Have you ever watched the series "Warrior"? Andrew Koji is the main protagonist. His martial arts skills are incredible. One of the last episodes of S2 features him in a nunchaku battle that feels like a contemporary Bruce Lee fight scene from Enter The Dragon. Can't recommend that series enough.

I'm not at all fond of the vast changes made to SE's origin. One of the aspects that made the original Hama run so great was that Snake Eyes and Tommy served together in the army. That establishes a comradey that just doesn't happen being members of a gang. There's no honor there.
Part of what makes Storm Shadow's "fall from grace" so moving (to me) is he USED to be honorable. SE and he saved each other's lives countless times in battle. They had a brotherhood forged by those battles that just doesn't happen against a backdrop of criminality. Their bond was so deep Tommy invited a Gaijin to join his clan. One of my favorite aspects to the Marvel run was Storm Shadow's redemption. It was a story of hope. This plot just doesn't seem to have a place for that. I'll see it the day it's released. I'm keeping an open mind. I hope it's well received and pulls in a wider audience thereby expanding the brand. I didn't like any of of Bay's TF movies as a whole. However, they did wonders for the TF brand and were directly responsible for all the great TF figures we got after those films. Transformers fans continue to reap the benefits today. I hope this movie makes billions. Every cloud. Silver lining. All that.

Snake-Eyes has had at least 5 1/2 different origin stories over the years (Marvel Comics, DDP "Reloaded" Universe, Rise of Cobra, Renegades, IDW, and Sunbow toons being the 1/2 because they never really went into his origins there but certainly never gave much indication it followed Hama's version).
Now it'll be 6 1/2. Point being, Hama's origin may be seen as the most popular among old school fans (probably because it was pretty much the one that old school fans got) but Hasbro has never considered it sacrosanct. |

I can't echo enough the comments made. This is not the Snake-Eyes I love and care about. I'll buy (so far) two toys for parts and that's it. As someone with every classified figure, and 400+ modern in my Joe collection and hundres more for custom parts, to say this is disappointing to me is an understatement. I have all of Marvel and IDW (up till the Serpentor arc) and Devils Due and every cartoon on blu ray or DVD. I even have the NES and Atari games and have 100%ed Operation Blackout on my Switch. Snake-Eyes is unlocked on the Fortnite game I've never played. This is a brand and a character I care about.
I just wanted Snake-Eyes. Such amazing talen on screen is being wasted on a tone deaf retread of other properties with a bad GI Joe coat of paint. I'll wait for a new cartoon or comic series that gets it right and go from there. |

This was the first time I saw Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow in the comics, being late in the Marvel run. I literally couldn't believe it, as I was used to the cartoon story line. This is what made me fall in love with the comics - complex, layered characters, with a very well developed identity that can't just be waved away.
Nowadays, I hardly get this feeling - if at all - from most productions. Everything is just disposable, two dimensional. There's a difference between remembering something and knowing it "by heart". These movie makers bet their chips on our nostalgic memory, but not on our affection. They want to sell Snake Eyes as a cool ninja, not as the soldier who lost his family, his voice and his face, who was betrayed, who made sacrifices, who became the best in what he does because that was all he could do. Could this character really ever have a different story and be as recognized and loved the same? Are you *that* confident that you can make a better story? *checks Rob Liefeld's take on the character I guess Snake Eyes is a cool ninja, and that's it. If the very owners of these IPs don't care, why should I?
