If they want me to buy another Duke, make a Duke I want to buy. How’s that for a business decision.

Yeah, that's all they have to do... Do you know where the molds for that figure are? Do you know if they're all together in one place or spilt up and stored in separate crates or in different facilities altogether? Do you know whether or not all those molds are still viable or are some damaged or even lost? No, you don't know. Neither do I nor any of us. But, yeah, "no excuse."
But the idea that I don’t have a reasonable expectation of satisfaction as a consumer is beyond moronic. To that end, if I’m supposed to consider those factors, then hasbro should level with us. But when you run a stream acting like we should be excited for product that was bad when it came out 12 years ago, why shouldn’t I be pissed?

The problem here though is this notion that Hasbro (and this line in particular) is supposed to be catering to you. They're not some boutique outfit with a focus on adult collectables. They're making toys that satisfy licensors, that have impressive ROIs to the major shareholders, that the retailers want to sell, and that kids & parents hopefully want to buy. Adult collectors are just gravy. Some of you really need to understand that because expectations are way out of whack with reality.

Nah, fuck that. As a consumer, I don’t give a shit about any of that. Not my job. And as part of the target audience for this line, it’s more than reasonable to voice my displeasure. Granted, I don’t have to buy the stuff, and I won’t. But in earnest, I’ll pretend hasbro wants my money and I’ll act accordingly. If they choose to ignore us, l’ll act accordingly in that case, as well.

In the end, all we do is cause stress for ourselves and act like assholes. Saying you don't like the product is one thing, and perfectly fine, but personal attacks against people doing a job is childish, lame and fucking ridiculous. A lot of it is obviously jealousy, as fanboys have this idea they could do a better job and should be working in these toy company/film-making/comic-writing positions. Well, that's ignoring a whole lotta reality. Would Hasbro love it if they're putting out stuff collectors love? Of course! But they're hamstrung by the reality of their corporate mission and that's just not their focus.

Retro lines by their nature are meant to appeal to adults. They prey on nostalgia that children don’t have. The expectation is incidental sales to children, but the true future of Joe is tied up in 6 inch. I think what you say is generally true, but not specifically true as it relates to Retro. If so, it won’t last long anyway.

I do wonder how many adult collectors there are for the Joe line - how much money does our demographic spend? I have to think the Adult collectors are more than a small niche.
Does anyone think Hasbro saw how pretty much everything from the 3.75" ARAH and 4" ME scales are going for way above market value on the after market and decided to trot out a quick line of re-hashed figures and vehicles and slap retro on them to try and ride the momentum of the current inflated prices Joe collectors are willing to pay? Along with appeasing to adult collectors of the 4" scale they may have viewed it as a safety net in the event the 6" line was a bust (it appears to be very successful which is great news for the Joe line as a whole). Keep expenses low and hopefully maximize profit off the nostalgia factor for this scale. Hasbro now has the excuse that they did not alienate collectors of the 4" scale with this line so they cover all their bases. Am I personally disappointed in the line? Yes and no. My disappointment was with the misleading retro label being used while not actually being true retro o-ring ARAH. So the marketing aspect of the line annoyed me more than anything. I haven't been inclined to have any sort of emotional reaction to the figures and vehicles in the first three waves. So far the line itself as not done much to gain my interest and unlike the vintage ARAH I am able to approach this line with a more pragmatic approach - I have the 25th vehicles. For my small 4" collection I may get the Snake Eyes, Storm Shadow, CC and Destro as I need one of each in the scale and do not feel like overspending on earlier releases of ME figures especially if these things end up at clearance. I don't really want or need a definitive version - just a decent looking version would do fine for me personally. I still hold out optimism for future waves though - I think we know the precedent for the retro line now. |

I think too many are viewing this line as a collector-focused event meant to fill holes in existing collections and "right previous wrongs," which has caused outsized expectations. It ain't that, unfortunately, so long-time fans are disappointed.

I think you're on the money with why a "retro" line is a thing in the first place, but I also suspect Walmart may have requested more retro stuff and/or that a GI Joe retro line was part of a package deal with the other retro lines from Transformers and Ghostbusters. It's crazy the deals that are worked out between the sales guys and retail buyers.

I am glad to see people are able to express themselves by showing their disdain, happy that 4" scale is still around in some capacity or approaching the whole thing with a good sense of humor (see the resurrection of the O-Face duke thread ) |
