Maybe it's just me, but whenever people use the word "cinema" in casual conversation, they always sound quite pretentious, actually.

Could be potentially promising. Sorta like a G.I.Joe version of "Boyhood".

And you know he'd never say that, if he didn't truly believe it.

Golding's father is British and he grew up largely in England, where the word "cinema" is more commonly used than "movie theater," which we favor in the U.S.

The part of his interview I find baffling is, "Robert is a huge Japanese cinephile, everything from [Akira] Kurosawa to just the phenomenal Spaghetti Westerns of samurai movies."

Spaghetti Westerns and samurai movies are two different things, from very different countries and cultures. A couple of famous Spaghetti Westerns were based on samurai movies, which is perhaps what he was referring to, but whatever he meant isn't at all clear from his word salad.

"Cinema" is what we call it on this side of the pond. No one would say "movie theater".

Oh, if he has a British accent, then that is quite different, actually. (Wasn't able to discern the elocution through a text interview.)

I'm not (originally) American either, but seeing as 90% of the people I'm around are, I still sorta try to "speak their language". Because I wouldn't want to sound pretentious. (Although an occasional "ghastly" or "mortified" still slips out sometimes.)

At any rate, this wasn't meant as a dig at Mr Golding (who seems like a cool guy).

Yeah, I'm thinking that might be a typo in the EW article, and it should read "or" instead of "of". Though your theory is plausible, also.

WARNING EVERYONE: I'm quarantining after being exposed to coronavirus at a party Tuesday night. So any offensive comments I make, assume it's the COVID-19 talking.
