So yeah, GIJoe needs a new cartoon. One with episodes about saving your friends, doing honorable things, protecting the innocent and fighting oppression and cruelty, all that while performing amazing feats like skydives and jungle treks and desert missions and mountain rescues and high speed chases jumping from helicopters into speedboats. You can even tie-in a videogame title. But your cartoon better be good. It better be great, and not something half-assed like Netflix Transformers. Not something made by people who think their three weeks crash course on some plastic toys is exactly the same as our experience as kids. Not something made by twitter people afraid of their own social media. Because if you allow scared people in your creative team, they'll be scared of their own product.

You have a point right there, Hasbro is lost on this. Yet the whole military thing being a problem is an exaggeration. GIJoe was a worldwide success for two things: the values it upheld and the adventure approach. Kids don't focus on tanks and guns because tanks or guns, they focus on challenge and imagination, and they're desperate to do what's *right*. If Hasbro kept doing green soldiers in 83, the line would surely have failed. But they gave us pilots, divers, deep divers, female figures and medics. And in the next year they gave us dog trainers, trackers, jungle rangers, skydivers, ninjas, alpinists, arctic explorers, circus villains, bikers, punks and so on. Every kid could find their favorite "self" in that line. Add to that some amazing articulation, accessories and vehicles, and you'll have something that will last for more than 40 years. To focus just on the military aspect of GIJoe is to undermine it's whole essence.

One better alternative is to regain the Adventure aspect. We're always complaining that kids play too much videogames, but what *are* they doing in these videogames? They're climbing, diving, hunting, fighting, racing, flying and in ALL of them they're doing what's right. All the stories we had in our cartoons, all the same imagination shortcuts that we had from TV they have now from videogames. The values are the same, let's not forget that our own generation paved these roads. They want to experience the same things we did, it's not their fault that toy companies left a vacuum that was quickly filled by games. Tone is a bit of a tough one for a cartoon since it has to fit what is considered kosher for kids entertainment these days. Although sometimes I think we forget that there was a huge difference in tone between the Real American Hero cartoon where the Joes might cross paths with Egyptian gods and the comic book where Larry Hama was teaching us all the cool military jargon.
Large cast cartoons also don't seem to be in favor which is a bit of a problem for GI Joe. If they limit the cast then someone is always going to be disappointed their favorite Joe or Cobra never shows up in the cartoons. Also harder to push figures to all the new fans if that character doesn't get a bit of the cartoon spotlight. But I don't give up hope because entertainment has found the right mix with characters like Captain America and HYDRA. They don't push the tie to the Nazis with HYDRA to get around what would be a serious issue for people. Captain America takes place in a fictional universe so thorny issues from the real world can be avoided. I think GI Joe could pull off something like this. |
