They want to make sure it has an actual theatrical release to give the ticket scalpers time to buy up all the movie tickets and list them on EBay for $100 a piece.
Sorry, bad joke. Bad, bad joke. |

There's no way this date holds. I think we're all getting worked up over nothing. I think all scheduling is extremely tentative right now.
I'd be shocked if they released this in the fall, in between two other superhero/comic movies. I'm not even sure Batman and Spiderman will release that close together.

If all these release dates hold, Snake-Eye's scheduled release date is three weeks after Batman. And almost 2 months before Spider-Man. I'm not sure why anyone would think those gaps will affect Snake-Eyes box office. Batman's numbers will have started dropping by then. As Steevy states, this is going to be a more modestly budgeted movie, so it doesn't need to pull in gigantic numbers. The movie is basically a launch pad for merchandise, which should be more lucrative than the box office haul (unless the movie does insane numbers). Jamming a bunch of releases into October is a bit odd, as it's not a typical month for tentpole movies.
I think the movie they don't want to release too close to is Shang-Chi since it has some martial arts thematic overlap. I think Hasbro should have tried to beat that film out. Shang-Chi is due in May (if it holds). I'm not sure how far along Snake-Eyes is in post-production, but Hasbro probably should have pushed for February or March. Theaters should be back and functional by then. Getting to theaters before the competition may have benefited them. Another thing to consider is, contrary to how it seems, it's not a great idea to launch a toyline around Christmas. You get lost in the holiday shuffle. Any kind of toy launch tends to happen earlier in the year. I don't expect the Snake-Eyes movie to have a huge merchandise push. For instance, it seems like its 6" figures will be folded into Classified waves instead of being their own thing. Certainly, there are some items like kids toys including roleplaying items, but I don't think we'll see a massive amount of offerings. |

Theatres are still unsure how current trends with COVID will play out. While restrictions have eased, people are still not turning out to theaters in numbers. I think Hasbro and Paramount are still pushing for SE as a tentpole so they REALLY want a big theatrical roll out. With that, the spring is still heavy on delayed entries from this year (including Ghostbusters and Morbius) and I don't think Paramount wants to stake out too early a claim in the event release dates continue to shift. I also think Hasbro might have had some input as well. Hasbro wants a (relatively) big rollout for GI Joe, and kicking to October would give them time to further maximize the marketing build up. They've been HIGHLY fortunate that Paramount hasn't done ANY sort of marketing for Snake Eyes yet, which means there is still potential in cross promotional efforts that got squandered with Retaliation. As is, the licensees for Top Gun (Lanard and Mattel) are getting completely screwed now that Paramount kicked TG2 to next summer. And now Hasbro's got to support Ghostbusters and Morbius this spring, which could adversely effect the merchandise from GI Joe had Paramount selected a spring date. Like retailers dropping stuff at the end of the spring movie toy season. Quote:

From what we've seen listings for, barring a major change from Hasbro, we'll be getting: A selection of characters from the movie in the Classified line A kid line with 6" figures (think the basic Marvel figure lines) Roleplay items And some exclusives. But getting that out during the fall rollouts will ensure that GI Joe is on shelves for Christmas. More than could be said for Retaliation's roll out.
