I think this shows confidence in the movie.
Hear me out! They could've dropped it onto VOD and let Paramount scrape up the "box office" (freed from $75 million+ in marketing) while Hasbro got a whooooole lotta advertising for their new toyline. But if they're holding it back? At the very least it means they think it can do some real serious business, enough to sit on it and eat the production costs for the better part of a year. I think it has more to do with the fact the studios have had almost no income for most of the year. Most tent poles were slated between March and...now...but with the issues with COVID across multiple markets, most have opted to "hold" films. And with production hold ups, the slate for next year is quite bare. And a theatrical release will garner more attention than a VOD release. As is, the biggest issue is that Snake Eyes hits about a month after Shang Chi, so it will be important for Paramount to be able to market how SE is different from that film which will also be heavy on the martial arts. But as said above, the slates for next year are screwed up and films are still apt to be shifted about. Fall/Holiday 2021 is a bit bare I can see some films moving out of summer to fill things out.

Love them or hate them the previous movies haven't been terrible. Granted they aren't high cinema and no Oscars are going to be handed out, but you ask me the Marvel movies that everyone adores so much are (mostly) overrated.

I meant more along the lines of setbacks and shifting of release dates causing problems for not only the movies but maybe the toys as well. I enjoy the previous movies.

Heck, you can drop "live action". The '87 animated movie paid the price for the failures of My Little Pony and Transformers and went direct to VHS! GI Joe may be the most cursed franchise out there (that manages to get movies made). There's always something that holds the films back. But no writers strike, direct to VH...er, video, 3D reshoots, or pandemic delay will stop me from supporting GI Joe media. I just hope it's good. Like I said, they've got plenty of time to polish it.

I called it over a year ago. Had no clue this pandemic would ruin things but G.I. Joe is never treated as a high priority by film or tv studios and definitely not by Hasbro.

Sony Delayed Venom 2 and morbius for a year. I m not shocked it would be a disaster to release in two months, look at Nolan is taking a heavy risk with the Tenet by releasing it worldwide this month and America next month which will likely have dvd rips with subs online
