Plenty of time to do multiple edits and focus testing. No post-production shots should be unpolished. Even more time for reshoots. Give the public the clearest, most polished product possible.
Honestly, so many movies are being delayed, there should be a tiny "golden age" of movies that have had all the time in the world to polish even the turds. Quick, rush out some classic figures to keep the shelf space warm! Modify the Retro line, use molds you just know they tested to see if they were still viable, and pump that stuff out! |

Yup. Disney did the same. Going to be ALOT of good movies in 2021.

I would agree with you if I thought general movie-goers would pay it. But I think people outside of diehard Joe fans pay to go see a movie like this in the theater for the experience and a chance to get away from their own TVs/houses; I doubt they would even bother to turn it on at home if it were free (relative term) on Netflix. Unfortunately, I have to agree that it would disappear and not make any impact if offered online…

Again, Universal did great numbers across ALL of their VOD co-releases, even if Trolls got the lion's share of attention. Considering the average cost of a theatre ticket ($10-15 PER PERSON), plus concessions, paying $20 to watch a new movie in the comfort of your own living room has its appeal even BEFORE everyone was worrying about a virus outbreak.
I know I'd pay $20 to rent an appealing brand new action film and not have to drive out, and pay out for a (at least in my podunk town) mediocre film experience. At this point, a delay is probably best for everyone since Paramount has functionally not even started to market the film. For Paramount, delays and hold ups caused by the virus has kneecapped their film slate for the next year or two. For Hasbro, a theatrical release innately brings more attention, which is what they want in relaunching a brand like GI Joe. That said, a VOD release isn't out of the question. Sponge on the Run (Spongebob Movie) was slated for a theatrical release next week before it was just shuttered to CBS All Access and VOD early next year. If COVID remains an issue into next year (which it may well), it may be deemed worthwhile to Paramount, and especially Hasbro, to simply get the movie out there and try to get as value as they can from marketing the toy lines.

I think this shows confidence in the movie.
Hear me out! They could've dropped it onto VOD and let Paramount scrape up the "box office" (freed from $75 million+ in marketing) while Hasbro got a whooooole lotta advertising for their new toyline. But if they're holding it back? At the very least it means they think it can do some real serious business, enough to sit on it and eat the production costs for the better part of a year.

June is a hell of a lot better than October for movies. So its not like they're trying to bury it. It wil have a ton of competition next summer though. It might be smart to release a trailer now to drum up some interest.
