For real, some great childhood memories of going to Ames with my mom and being able to grab a joe or two since they were only $1.99 or so. We didn’t have a lot of money, so I was always happy when she’d let me pick a couple out.

as for buying multiples of these figures... there is something negative to be said about it, no matter what the motivation.
If you buy multiples to sell - you suck as a person. If you buy multiples to trade - there is some justification because you are trying to get what you missed out on or might... but you are still taking part in contributing to the scarcity of these figures. You are possibly causing some other collector to go to ebay, make a trade, or go without. If you buy multiples to help others out, even at cost plus shipping - you are doing somebody a solid... but at the same time taking away the chance for the local collector to get those figures. There is something to be said for people being able to buy these at their own store. And if you are an army builder - well, you are just a little selfish because you want 3-4 and this causes some folks to not get any. the only people that are blameless in this entire fiasco are the folks who buy one for themselves and leave the rest for other collectors If the figures are left on the shelf, there's a 50/50 chance (or more) that a scalper will get them. This is grown from the total frustration of seeing HUNDREDS of Vipers and Fireflys on-line and reading/hearing how many collectors can't find one. And when they do, there's the hollow victory post "I hit 3 stores and talked to 4 employees, but I got ONE!" Yes, this stinks for other local collectors, and they will most likely curse scalpers under their breath. But the more figures get to collectors, any collectors, the better. And the more hate there is for scalpers, the better. Then maybe people won't feed them and they'll leave us alone. One can dream, right? I see they can.... If I saw something like this I would freeze. Definitely thank Almighty God in Heaven, perhaps even on one knee. Then maybe pass out. When I wake up, take a picture or two, grab some figures and run giggling to check out.

I think the logic behind buying for trade/to help at cost+ (which is sound, IMHO) is to be *sure* the figures one finds get to a collector for as close to retail price as possible.

Anyways, just wanted to kinda say something as an owner of multiple vipers. Yeah I bought a few for myself. I won't make any excuses. The Viper is hands down my favorite nameless grunt in any property, so naturally I was going to want to army build them. I ended up finding 5 of them over the course of two weeks. One went to a local at cost and the other went to a friend of 20 years free of charge. Had I got a 6th figure, it too would've went to a local collector at cost. Part of me is salty, I'll definitely admit. I'm one of those who never saw a single CI figure, not even that mythical peg warming Roadblock. I missed out on all the pre-orders and based on what I read that still wouldn't have even guaranteed me a figure. Hell, ALL I've ever seen is Vipers. I've never seen a Firefly in the wild. So I'm going to be a tad selfish and say I'm going to troop build. I don't want it like this but it's out of my power. This is on Hasbro, this is on Target, not those who want to troop build these guys. I only wanted one Trooper and that isn't gonna happen, so can you really blame me if I wanted to keep a few of these Vipers for myself? I mean look. Had I not gotten them. Had I left one on the shelf every time, there's no guarantee that it would've gone to a collector. I'd rather know FOR SURE that it went to a collector, me or otherwise, rather than chance it being one of those being flipped on ebay. |

Also, I don't believe that they necessarily limited their order on the exclusives. To get an exclusive contract, they had to buy a certain amount of that figure. Plus, Target is known to order a lot of action figure exclusives that they usually end up putting on clearance (obviously not Cobra Island, but think Marvel Legends). Remember, there are 6 figs per box. A wave 1 box for example had 2 SE and 1 each of Roadblock, Scarlett, Destro, Duke. A Cobra Island box contains 6 Vipers. For all we know Target has ordered more Vipers total than a Destro. Since for every wave 1 box they only had to make 1 Destro but then make 6 Vipers for 1 exclusive box. Demand is at infinity right now. People will just keep buying everything they see. Between collectors, army builders and resellers, I don't ever anticipate Vipers to warm the pegs even if they exponentially increase its production. I know this whole thing sucks but before we bash Target and swear never to buy stuff from them again - Target and Walmart are pretty much it when it comes to getting toys on a nationwide scale right now. If Target bows out (they won't of course) then things would look even more grim. I for one am glad that Target expanded their toy dept after TRU went away. That's been my primary source to feed my plastic crack addiction. |

Whether they got more vipers than destro is irrelevant. One case of 6 in a month span, maybe 2 months isn't enough. It's a troop builder and a popular one at that. They could have ordered a case a day and it still might not be enough. Hasbro should have known better than to make a troop builder an exclusive. For the SECOND time. That, and distribution is just plain pitiful.

I guess the solution for this idealistic way of thinking is for collectors not to by any figures and let the general public to get them...
