A week or two later my Dad was in the same area and surprised me with a comic book. G.I.Joe 21. I was mesmerized but wondered what was wrong with no words LOL. I wish I still had that copy. Anyway, this was my gateway into comics and I quickly branched out to Batman, Spider-man, and then Justice League by Giffen and DeMatteis a couple years later. The last issue I really remember reading of Joe is 86. |

To this day I've never read a comic book in my life, Joe or otherwise. I've never been interested in the medium. I grew up on the Sunbow cartoon though, and that kept my toy interest alive until about age 12 or 13.
I only ever came back to Joes when I started having kids and wanted to give them the Joe experience. I'm a picky shopper on their behalf though. No 5-PoA trash, no scale change. They have a lot of my vintage vehicles to play with, a few vintage figures, and then tons of modern-era Joes, Marvel, LotR, 1:18 Halo, MTF, and BFS, etc. I bought Scarlett, Lady Jaye, Stalker, and Grunt from the retro series for the kids and left the rest hanging on the proverbial pegs. Well, I bought a $5 clearance Cobra Fang too, but c'mon... $5! If they kept going in the Stalker/Grunt build direction and fixed proportion issues, I'd have kept buying. 25th Duke, the Fang pilot/Cobra Trooper, and things like that would have remained a pass for me.

Today I finally saw shelves filled with Gi Joe toys. Stacks of Hiss tanks, cobra troopers and Stalkers plus the swords and masks from the movie. It was really pretty cool. I just grabbed a HISS tank for my youngest and put it in the cart with the other stuff I was buying. I hope we get more of that in the years to come. Shelves stocked with all kinds of Gi Joe items. Yo Joe.

I grew up reading the comics and watching the cartoons. My first exposure to GIJoe though was the commercials for the toys. Then I discovered the comics books at around issue 3. We lived out in the country when I was a kid, and GIJoe aired on a UHF channel. So, out in the woods, the reception was staticky.
However, as I've mentioned in several other threads, Sunbow's introduction of Duke, for me, was like Boba Fett in the SW Holiday Special, which is why that incarnation of the character has always been popular with me. Same is true with Flint and Lady Jaye (my two favorite 'Joes). Marvel issue 11 The Pipeline Ploy was what really hooked me on the comics. I continued reading the comics until around issue 87, and I quit collection/playing with the toys around 1988, maybe. I seem to remember owning Shockwave and Storm Shadow 2. Around 1988 is when I got introduced to BMX freestyle and got a GT Performer for my birthday. That pretty much dominated my life until I was 21-22. I got back into toy collecting in 1995 with Star Wars the Power of the Force figures and collected those all the way up to the first "Black Series" figures or around the time the GIJoe Kwinn figure was shown at Toy Fair. During the time I collected SW figures, I was big time into customizing and doing a photonovel called "Vader's Quest." I even created a SW fan website webpage and the Ultimate Mos Eisley Cantina Resource Page (ultimate for its time! ) https://cantinacustoms.tripod.com/id25.htm Between the distribution problems of SW back then and Hasbro was releasing one of my favorite comic characters, I made the jump back into GIJoe collecting/customizing just before the Retaliation movie. Are people putting 3rd party heads on the new Walmart 4" Grunt's body without modification?
Still haven't seen Grunt and Cobra Officer in stores. Just Stalkers. |

Walmart has peg space for these figures I never heard of that probably don't even have their own cartoon or video game or anything, and very little GI Joe space.
