Don't have them yet. Soon. In general the comment was more directed at the Troopers and virtually ever prior Retro figure.
I finally opened up Scarlett and Storm Shadow recently. Her crossbow won't stay together at all, and SS's backpack won't stay in his back. Such a buzzkill for hugely important characters. I'm hoping Grunt and Stalker will be a breath of fresh air. Stalker is out for delivery right now.

I wonder if this new build style is the way forward. I thought that until we got Rip It and he was a repaint of the older style.

Backpacks have been an issue for a decade, because figures are loaded with harnesses or vests to make a character unique while still using the same base mold for 20 figures. Or the peg holes are intentionally small for the sake of “aesthetics” over necessary functionality. My HOPE with John Warden coming back to Joe is that he’ll bring some of that Transformers experience from the past decade (which FABULOUSLY walked the fine line between toy and collectible in the Generations segment all while accommodating changing cost structures). Since Hasbro has shifted production to Vietnam, they aren’t as bound to the old tooling library and I’d like to see them make some more pragmatic decisions on the design of these figures. My FEAR is that Retro is that Hasbro will squander this opportunity and we’ll see them follow the same damn design patterns they did with 25th and stick with characters they’ve already done many times before.

Yeah if Stalker is anything to go by I can't wait for Grunt. I had no intention of getting into Retro but if they keep going with these new molds and design approach, I'll be buying a bunch more. Bring on Rock N' Roll! The plastic feels good too. The last 50th I got were gummy.

It’s because all these figures are being designed as “collectibles” first and toys second. While a LOT of the decisions sound good ON PAPER, materials and QC are no where up to the standard of making those decisions work IN PRACTICE.

Some great comments above and I agree with all, especially the designed the figures as "collectibles" first and prioritizing aesthetics over functionality argument.
I'm double psyched for Stalker to get here now. Still out for delivery. |

I'm hoping the redo some of the first ones they did with the newer approach, if the line sticks around.

I wouldn't mind a redo either. The line got off on the wrong foot.
Just got Stalker and agree that he's pretty much definitive. Soft hands and weapons are my only complaint, but that's all modern figures in this scale. Virtually every figure using this buck should come out stellar barring a butchered head, paint or accessories. Unlikely for all. Now we need a second go-to buck. |

Here's a controversial opinion- the new troopers are ugly, but they are infinitely better toys than any of the previous modern troopers.
