Actually I just now text and asked my brother what product that catalog came with. I didn't say anything else. He said a gi joe vehicle. So it's not a fuzzy memory. Just weird. There were no commercials, cartoons or anything at that time. Sorry to derail the thread

Lanard are an off-brand toyline.

I'm thinking maybe someone purchased the vehicle in question, opened it up to switch out the driver figure with an inferior off-brand figure and then returned it to the store for a full refund.

Sometimes they put weird stuff (like Masters of the Universe ads) in with it to mess with people.

Hate to break it to you man, there's a 99.9999999999999% chance he's right- He-man was manufactured by Mattel and GIJoe was Hasbro. But... Had I worked at the Hasbro factory, you can bet that I would totally have done something like that to mess with people. Or filled the box up with My Little Ponies. So there is always that 0.0000000000001% chance that it happened that way.

Except that the 4" Star Wars "modern" figures are $13 at Walmart right now, and the 4" "retro" figures were $10 at Target when they were out last year. (supposedly the new wave of SW retro is coming to Walmart but I haven't seen them anywhere and don't really follow SW toys)

Difference is, SW modern figures cost more to make than SW 5poa Vintage figures, whereas O Ring Joes cost more to make than Modern Joes. Modern Joes are actually surprisingly cheap, to the extent that as recent as 2016 (when Modern SW figures were already $13 a figure) Modern Joes came in $16 two packs

All I'm saying is we can't judge on pricepoint alone. Its all rumors and until we get an announcement or leaks of toys from China we likely aren't to know. Guessing based on pricing is still just a guess.
