I'm sure the reason for no O-ring all comes down to cost. Not only would Hasbro have to create new tooling for what amounts to a very limited-run line of toys, but the cost per figure vs. modern construction is likely higher (metal rivets, an additional screw, more complicated t-bar, the O-ring itself). That would've meant an even higher price (maybe like $14.99/figure or higher instead of $12.99). If this were more than just a single retailer exclusive, they might have been able to justify it, but not especially when dealing with just Walmart who very likely demanded a low, low wholesale price Hasbro had to meet.

I believe time was more an issue, and its more of a case of a new brand manager and design team looking for a quick win so they can get their budget increased in the next fiscal year. This was painless, quick, and got product out without the need of producing new molds. In order to get the quick win though you sacrifce the quality of well designed lined. If they were able to add another year these might of been closer to the original O-rings. |

Did Kenner to a better job of archiving their old molds or did Hasbro retool vintage Star Wars and vintage Real Ghostbusters for those lines? I wanted O-ring because to me that is retro but I get the term is open to interpretation. Certainly easier/cheaper for them to tool ME figures. Just doesn’t fee retro to me except for the packaging. Even that is missing the white border, proper file cards and “A Real American Hero”. Again I’m happy Joe is making a come back.

The Star Wars retro molds are actually new from what I hear, but the construction of those figures is also much simpler--plus, Star Wars--so I'm sure the cost is lower and easier to justify. No idea about Ghostbusters. |

There are two people I can think of that produce O-ring figures with relative ease. So I don't believe making them is an issue.

if black major. letal customs and Red laser can make o-ring figures with eaze. then I dont see the problem with hasbro being able to make them. I dont think its an excuse that the molds were destroyed when many 3rd party people are making them with eaze. and even getting new releases regulary on top of that. all u have to do is go to black major instagram he always has new figures and paint apps every few months it seems.

Word is Hasbro leased old ARAH O-ring molds to Funskool in India who didn't take care of them, ruining many. IIRC, DePriest also let it slip that a cargo container of the molds actually sank on it's way back to the U.S. or something like that. So, basically, Hasbro officially stated they no longer have useable o-ring molds.

Didn't the club report that the remaining o-ring molds were lost when the Chinese government nationalized the company that was storing the molds. I forget where I read it now, but one of the Star Wars sites, rebelscum maybe, had a story that seemed to collaborate that. They reported that most of the older Star Wars molds were also lost as well as G1 Transformers. Which would explain all the G1 bootlegs on ebay.

I also believe any remaining molds (like ones the Collector's Club would use) were destroyed within a year of two of the 25th launch. Something about not wanting to pay to store them anymore. That was after the 2008 crash so they were cost cutting and trying to save jobs.

For example, let's say Hasbro still had o-ring molds last used in the early 2000's, which was almost 2 decades ago now. Before they could sell toys made from them, the toys would have to be re-certified for today's safety standards. Don't forget that o-ring figures are actually closer to "action-feature" toys than most other action figures because they are literally always under tension from the o-ring itself, and that means they're subject to additional safety guidelines. Now, knowing Hasbro doesn't have the old molds, they'd have to engineer new ones and that means the new toys would also have to be certified for safety. That all adds cost. Meanwhile, the 25th/POC/30th toys were all used recently, which means it's safe to assume they're all certified safe to today's standards and that in itself cuts the cost dramatically.
