Probably. They had that sub-line during the 25th-era that were probably toys too...Combat Heroes, I think...I can't remember the name. Oh, shit, actually they've had toys out since the Snake Eyes movie: those 5" figures (that I regret not buying when I saw them on clearance) and the dollar/discount store stuff.

Remember the conventions where the kids were playing with buckets of Joes? They weren't playing with collector pieces or 12 inch, they were playing with Valor VS Venom because those were true figures for kids. That's because they were toys with cartoons to promote them with tons of kid friendly features, no wonder the collector community rejected them even though over time we've been more forgiving. |

As far as being "toyetic" is concerned, they're on an even playing field, perhaps slightly better due to being made to withstand heavier play. The articulation is 1:1 in 99.9% of cases as well.

I've seen kids play with just rocks, a dried out crab claw, boxes, packing bubbles and sticks without a care in the world. If you walk over to them and hand them anything with a smile on your face to add to the mix they are probably going to figure out a way to add it in and play with it at least for a little while. It could be a hammer, Transformer, water balloon, playdoh or a spear. It depends on their inherent desires and their taught influences and prejudices. So it follows that if you set a kid somewhat free in a store and told them they could get one thing to play with it's nearly impossible to imagine what they would get. It would be based on what you taught them and what has influenced them but it could still surprise you. It could be a fishing pole, PS5, shoes, camp stove, clothes or it could be something totally out of left field like a piece of jewelry or a car radio. My kids found an incomplete cross-stitching kit and now they want to learn how to do it but I have no idea. Their room is a hodge-podge of "treasures". One kid says he's obsessed with Baby Yoda despite never having seen the show (nor have I but I want to) or knowing anything about where it came from. He also loves dolphins and bugs and fishing (I don't know how to fish nor do I enjoy it but I try to take him). The only GI joe that they like is Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes and that is with no prompting from me, they just saw them one day and decided they liked them. The reasons a kid wouldn't pick any given "toy" something are innumerable but I think the largest factors that work AGAINST what we call toys/traditional toys are the following - 1. Jaded (or just content / satisfied). If they have enough or too many other things holding their interest; too many options, too many possessions to focus or care about anything new. They already have more than enough to satisfy their innate desire to explore, create and play so they don't need or want toys. 2. Overstimulated. Mobile device in hand, gaming device in backpack, headphones on their ears & repeating lines from the last YouTube video or movie they've watched for the 15th time. If a kid is otherwise engaged with too many sources of entertainment they have no desire for a toy which demands even the slightest bit of engagement, imagination or time. 3. Detached. If a kid no longer trusts, cares, loves or values the source of the recommendation then they may turn away from even an object which otherwise may have naturally interested them. This could be because their friend says something is stupid and they trust their friend more or just because they are temporarily mad at the parent/sibling/friend who recommends something. 4. They find it scary/distasteful (for whatever reason) or don't understand it or it isn't within what they consider to be "acceptable" boundaries set by their parents/society/peers In order for a kid to want to play with these modern toys that as you guys accurately describe as more like statues they need to have downtime, quiet moments without other obligations or distractions. And they need to have the desire and ability to make-believe and enjoy imaginary play where they can envision fun scenarios for the toy or enjoy the aesthetics of the toy or enjoy posing the toy (even if it has no articulation) and imagining scenes. When I was a kid I played outside and took my toys with me. I had fun by digging little tunnels for the toys to go into or making them take watch from the tree branches or posing them around things as I played or even just throwing them around. If I hadn't have had any toys I would've done the same thing with stones or clods of dirt. If I had multiple electronic devices I may have been stuck on those. If I had a parent who put me in some kind of sport or club that took a lot of time and attention then I may have been focused more on that. But I grew up in a situation where I had a good amount of free time outside to myself with toys to play with. I've rambled quite a bit but I think, going back to your statement about putting a kid in the toy dept and what they would pick: As I said there are countless variables but you're right that parent influence is a big one but that's not a bad thing. If it wasn't parent influence (we should all be so lucky to have kids who do listen and care about what we think is cool) then it ould be commercials, comics, movies, youtubers (yikes) and peers.

I think kids can basically love almost anything you put in front of them. Everything is a "toy" to kids until you tell them it isn't. The entire purpose of toys is to be a harmless object which holds their attention and results in enjoyment through interaction of some kind and stimulates their imagination or innate desire to play and explore the world and their own thoughts.

It's more than that though. I just don't see kids in the action figure aisle like I used to, and those you do see are a lot younger than 7-12. Maybe I'm just never in one when the kids are though.

Really? Even when I just walk past a toy department, I rarely see more than a couple of people down the aisles, and they're usually adults, either single men or moms/dads with a small child in the cart. The action figure aisle itself is mostly always a lone middle-aged guy or two, and sometimes a mom with or without a small child. I very rarely see a boy or two in there excitedly looking around like I used to. It was genuinely dead this past holiday season in the toy aisles. And this is Utah, where the families tend to be large and kids are usually goddamn everywhere. Part of that is definitely due to online shopping though. People nowadays tend to only go into Walmarts for groceries and household shit, and Targets are apparently full of moms taking selfies in changing rooms.
