I saw on another forum that the Wave 5 case contains:
Cobra Officer x2 Grunt x2 Stalker x1 Cobra Trooper x1 Can anybody else confirm? It sounds correct to me as that is exactly what was on the pegs today. What is Hasbro thinking with sending out more Stalker and Cobra Troopers? Especially Stalker. Too bad they didn’t include Scarlett or Baroness again for those that missed them before. Admittedly, there's a lot of nostalgia and personal bias wrapped up in this, but I personally find modern-era figures very aesthetically unappealing. Yes, the sculpting has more detail, but they also have that unsightly hinge across the torso for no reason, and far too many of them have gangly limbs, are bow-legged and hunched over. Not to mention how many years it took Hasbro to figure out that diaper crotches look stupid before they finally fixed that problem.
And while the decision to make their webgear, vests, and such as wearable accessories rather than sculpted details may have sounded like a great idea in theory (now boys can play dress-up with their figures just like Barbie!), they never look right. The molded plastic gear and clothes are too bulky and don't fit on the bodies like actual clothing or belts would. While vintage o-ring figures may not be as detailed in the sculpt or have 650 extraneous points of articulation (let's make their feet swivel 360-degrees for no reason at all!), they have a simplicity and elegance I much prefer. I think they strike a better balance of aesthetics and playability. YMMV.

I wish hasbro would get over this thought process that a "retro" or collector line has to be limited. I remember the commitment they had to Marvel Universe and they were easily able to get more than 10 3.75 inch figures out a year. It's not like GI Joe doesn't have enough characters. At this rate I have doubts that they will even get thru the first season charachters. And lets not even get started on the vehicles.

Star Wars does it right. Too bad Joes don't have the audience to support the same plan.
Retro = figures that look like the 80s Kenner figures and mix in new media figures TVC = modern figures on retro card backs For GI Joe that would be: Retro = O-Ring figures TVC = the current Retro line I do wonder if GI Joe: The Vintage Collection might have drawn more eyeballs and interest if it were considered a connected sub-line to Star Wars TVC. Maybe that would cause too much confusion. Hasbro has their marketing reasons. |

The amount of Stalkers and Cobra Troopers on pegs in my area is a little ridiculous. There are plenty of Fangs and Hiss IIIs stacked on shelves as well. No sight of Grunt or the Officer in-store, but I got an email notification tonight for the shipment of my pre-orders and they should be delivered this week.
I like ME figures a lot, but I'm a sucker for the classic aesthetic of the o-ring design and I would be ecstatic for a new line of the true vintage style. Last edited by Superbad; 10-21-2021 at 05:05 AM.. |
