But the real question is can Paramount afford them after the awesome they did in the MCU? Quote:
I would believe our current Commander in chief than anything WGTC “prints”.

There's nothing that requires a director to "be a fan" of a property in order to make a good movie about it.
In fact, sometimes it might be better if they're not, particularly when it comes to Joe. There's a whole lot of variations on what any given fan likes about Joe and what they think the franchise needs to do to survive and maybe thrive again. Whichever loose "faction" the director would fall into they would make decisions that piss off the other factions. You could get any given member of these forums to write and direct their "perfect" Joe movie and I guarantee a significant portion of the rest of the people on these forums would say it's crap for various reasons. A Director might be better off coming at the material with fresh eyes, because it allows them to focus on making a good movie that will hopefully appeal to more than just an existing fanbase. As long as they have folks involved that DO know the source material and create their product with a modicum of respect for that source material, you can still end up with a high-quality product. Or perhaps the best of both worlds is having a Director that's a "passing" fan: Someone that likes the source material but isn't deeply emotionally invested to the point they feel like they have to be slavishly devoted to existing lore and interpretations. See: Christopher Nolan and the Dark Knight Trilogy. All that said, the rumor is almost certainly bogus, but if it WERE true than it'd probably be the best thing to happen to Joe in a long-ass time. Stephen Sommers was originally a fine choice. He'd done plenty of action-adventure movies that were well-liked. He just didn't click with Joe, mostly because he and Di Bonaventura were too eager to somehow work the "Accelerator" script into the mix. Beyond that the Writer's Strike didn't help. Even after all that we ended up with something that carried a lot more beats of the old Sunbow toons than a lot of people care to admit.
All that said: "Better" is relative. It could be the best director for a new GI Joe movie is some guy or gal we've never heard of, but if they announced that, people would be complaining that it's not <insert A-list director here>. The thing with A-List directors though...is that they have to WANT to work on your property. I doubt there are many/any A-list directors eager to hop on the Joe bandwagon. |

Agreed Jmaq. The biggest complaints I hear about the movie are always about the Accelerators, noise guns, and nanomites, yet those things would all fit in just fine with Sunbow.

I know this rumor is going to be grade A bull dung, but if it were true, holy crap.
Winter Soldier was one of the best movies Marvel has put out. I could see that movie easily be made into a Joe movie. I mean, Captain America could be Snake Eyes and Bucky was Storm Shadow who was brain washed. Fury is hawk, black widow is Scarlett. The Russos are great at writing and directing large scale character movies as well. Make it happen! |

Those are the biggest complaints you hear? The accelerator suits and nanomites weren't the complaints I mainly heard. It was the relationship between Duke and Baroness, Duke and Cobra Commander being military buddies, Baroness and Cobra Commander being brother and sister and the Ripcord being black and always up in Scarlett's ass. And not to mention every Joe wore generic uniforms and there individual uniforms that at least gave them character. Oh yeah, and Cobra Commanders fish bowl helmet. But yes, I agree that the nanomites and accelerator suits are Sunbow-ish.

My number one complaint wasn't anything specific at all, in fact it was really just that they were such unmemorable experiences. If you stripped away the names and (admittedly loose) character likenesses, both would have just been perfectly inoffensive, but very VERY vanilla action flicks. Not terrible, just super boring.
