I appreciate the kind words - interacting with fans and collectors was one of my favorite parts of the job, especially on G.I. Joe since I'm a fan and collector too. Bobby, Andrew and Erik are all top notch designers and good peeps too. Maybe the new people running G.I. Joe now will have a chance to connect with the fanbase at New York Toy Fair?

Well, yes… and maybe it’s a good thing.
Israeli citizens over the age of 18 are required to perform mandatory national military service, unless exempted by a psychological profile. That’s where this former IDF Lieutenant comes into the picture. She and the 120 soldiers under her command in the Psycho-Technical Recruitment Unit work in office spaces, similar to our recruiting stations in the United States. The psycho-technical test stations administer the test to all applicants, and the KABA (a numeric figure) is used by the IDF to assist applicants with their initial placement in the military. In the United States of America, we similarly administer the ASVAB test at Military Entrance Processing Stations (MEPS) and schools. Every junior at my local high school is required to take the ASVAB test. Not every student will opt to join the military, but the data collection is still important. So technically, she did her required service for her country (Israel) over a period of three years (1999-2002), and brings with that to Hasbro a rare analytic experience. She might have even met some IDF soldiers during her career at the various recruitment stations (* my attempt at humor*). She sounds like a VERY intelligent bean counter to me, skilled at data collection. Let’s see what she can do to market the G.I. Joe brand for Hasbro. Maybe she can come up with a test for Joe Fans so she can quantify what we want in our figures!!! Quote:
I was just clearing up some organizational confusion over on Facebook - not that I know how it's all working these days. As I understand it, John Reale (who ran Design & Development on G.I. Joe and lots of other owned boys brands out of the Burbank office) was part of the Hasbro layoffs a few weeks ago.
Tom Warner is the Senior VP in charge of G.I. Joe (along with Transformers and Micronauts/Stretch Armstrong/M.A.S.K./ROM/Visionaries/Action Man etc). Reporting to him is Jenny Whitlock, the VP of Global Brand Strategy (essentially the new Derryl DePriest) out of the Burbank office, and reporting to her in Burbank is Irvin Ducournau, the Senior Brand Manager (essentially the new me). I don't know how Roni Noyman fits into that new hierarchy - her title is hard to place. It does seem odd that they would add someone to the G.I. Joe team from the Pawtucket office, but this wasn't a posted position and she's working on her MBA from M.I.T. so it's possible she's moving to Burbank when it's done, or that this is a lateral "placeholder" move for her while she completes her studies. I don't have any issue with female professionals running any brand, and her military background is certainly a plus. We overlapped at Hasbro for a couple of years but I don't remember ever meeting her. That being said, everyone raises an eyebrow internally when someone makes the shift between boys/girls/gaming brands. The good marketers make it work by diving in and learning, but the dim ones assume "marketing is marketing" and they struggle. Someone who is moving around laterally between boys/girls/games is usually career-focused and looking to move up the ladder quickly. I'm always going to be a fan of G.I. Joe and I hope she does a great job and that this move means more item count, more tooling budget and more great toys for all of us. Time will tell how she does on a scale of zero to Weber.

That "we" is too small, and, frankly, too fractious amongst ourselves (and some of the we are too nasty towards pretty much whomever makes a go of the brand licensing, etc) to be the core focus, and probably has been for decades. That's the "we" who often waits for things to go on sale at Ross, or knocks kids over at parachute drops in order to flip things on ebay. The "we" who harasses artists, writers, creators and such on social media. Harsh reality; but what toy company really wants to continue to cater to that kind of attitude? Certainly it's a small, vocal and stinky-attitude minority--but it drives away new customer bases in droves. Let go of the idea that Hasbro is going to poll 40 year old collectors for toy design guidance. It's not that we're being *rejected*, it's just that they want to make more people than us interested in the line, so we have to accept that we are a *part* of the market, not all of it. |

That's the major stumbling block that has to be gotten over; for the brand to continue, Hasbro has to look beyond the "we" demanding things of them.

What I do hope is that Hasbro just doesn't forget or give up on us. I see no reason that "we" as a group can not get the same type of treatment the OG SW and Transformers fans get. Yes I know both have a much larger following but Hasbro continues to give those old school fans a heavy nod while still predominantly reaching out to pull new fans in.
