Hasbro started a long time ago the international path in 1989 with the Dic Operation Dragonfire with them calling International Heroes...
https://youtu.be/WCV00cXG7YE I think every one here knows Hasbro has made G.I. Joe international before. I am still saying I am not a fan then or now of that. I never really liked the Adventure Team line in the 70s. I mean the international hero lyrics don't even work melodically. LOL! It is silly too and makes no sense to say these are "international heroes" and then the name of your entire brand are slang words that ONLY describe Americans. I hope everyone here knows what GI and Joe refers to? Because if you do it is rather nonsensical to try to make it refer to anything else. For example, one could walk into a bar just off of a military base in the States and go, "Hey there are a lot of GIs in here." Or "There are a lot of Joes in here." You are not going to go to the UK and walk into a bar next to a British military base and say the same thing. Their service members are not called GIs or Joes but rather Tommies. I get why they are doing this especially now. They are trying to save on the cost of printing up new boxes and packaging and calling them something else and have different translations, etc, for the international market. So instead we get this cut the corners approach to save money but it just makes everything look stupid saying these GI Joes are not Americans but rather some international dudes. |

When I first saw the icons on the side of the new boxes my first thought wasn't "this is them modernizing the brand", they can spin it any way they want, but this is really how you do a file card on modern packaging without having it look like the disaster that is the "retro" file card. They say "globalization" and "modernization", but what they mean is cutting costs by having one unified packaging for global branding where they can ship them off to anywhere in the world without having to deal with ever changing language laws. Then they can cross-sell this by having consumers check on the website to figure out what those little pictures mean and get a fuller "file-card" on a website that can feature current characters, tease up coming ones, and give information about other branded stuff people can throw their money at. The execution of that falls well short mind you, but that's really the idea behind it all. Sell, sell, sell.

In Australia, it was Action Man to start with, then became GI Joe by the 90s. All the toys were repackaged and the file cards were still Americans. It was just the branding that was changed. This is likely why most Australian Joe fans don't remember the line till the late 80s, it was Action Man before that. |

BTW, Hasbro's website really needs to update their image gallery. Several portraits (Trooper, Viper, Zartan, Firefly) fail to reflect their Classified likenesses. Plus Beach Head isn't even shown at all. Also, I'm not a fan of "placeholders", just leave a darkened silhouette there, until that particular character is ready to reveal. And on the previous topic ... personally speaking, I'd rather have no filecard on the package, than an unattractive or poorly-written one.

I just looked up and read a little about this DiC series and they significantly cut the budget down it says from where it was with the Sunbow Cartoons and DiC is a foreign company and produced the cartoon in Canada. No wonder they made them international for this cartoon. The figures at the time never said that on the packaging, did it?
But DiC did go on to change the theme from Real International Hero to Got to Get Tough, which is just wrong if you ask me. Most of the internationalization never bothered me though. Why is it the exclusive domain of the US military to guard against an international terrorist organization determined to take over the world? Isn't that a global threat? Shouldn't that be more of a UN thing. I don't mind the globalization but having them all specifically be American never bothered me either. |

Buster is Brian O'Conner, an alias of a Chuckles, the Joe's undercover specialist. He's currently in hiding on a really deep cover assignment involving street racers and stolen DVD players.

Thanks for the history lesson, I truly had no idea about the US/Canadian flags. Now I want to see galleries for some of those changes!

Oh, and I have no idea why I said "Crystal Ball" earlier. I meant Dr Mindbender, actually. Although I could totally see a Crystal Ball with glowing red eyes and a scarier shield design (maybe a spinning skull or "evil eye" instead of that flower) being made somewhere down the line. Somewhere way down the line. However, in all honesty, none of those guys (including Barbecue) seem especially worthy of an additional version.
