Hasbro isn't stupid. They changed course very quickly after receiving reactions to Wave 1 -- so quickly that Cobra Commander and Gung Ho changed colors at the last minute.

No - you know what's not defensible? Inserting idiotic woke messaging into a discussion about toys. Leave your elitist viewpoints out of it.

Of everything we have, I'd argue the only good designs are Arctic Storm Shadow, Duke, Baroness, Red Ninja and both Destros. I know Duke would be contentious, but it's my opinion. All six of these figures share a lot in common, the primary colours of the figures are broken up well by vibrant colours and are eye catching without being garish. Like 82-94, they walk that line well of 'realism' and being an appealing toy. You can take them seriously, but they feel whimsical enough to be fun. I think Baroness could use a more vibrant Cobra insignia though. Zartan and Flint get very close, but additions / changes to the costumes remove some of the skin tone that broke up the colours of the toy. I noticed this comparing them to the original V1s of both toys. Flint's sleeves are too far down and his white skin doesn't break up the dark clothes. Zartan's neckerchief does the same to his neck, but thankfully that's an easy fix. Figures like Roadblock v1, Beachhead, Lady Jaye, Cobra Infantry, retail Cobra Commander, Cobra Trooper, Roadblock Repaint, Scarlett Repaint and Gung Ho. All of them are too bland and dull. Colours are too muted and they're unappealing, especially in comparison to older 3 3/4 iterations of these characters. Nothing really breaks up the colours or the primary colour lacks saturation. They're shit as toys, too adult orientated. Then we have the other side of that, Regal CC, who's saturation is way too far in the opposite direction. It's more appealing as a toy, but is too far. There are a few figures I didn't mention, but I don't like them for other reasons. |

Does nobody see the 'sculpting' as part of what is lacking? Something about it just seems run-of-the-mill to me. For one, they all feel a bit too 'stocky'. They are just a little too thick for my tastes. Cobra Commander, Beachhead, Zartan, Firefly, Flint... their torsos are all too thick, imo. Something about the upper torso joint seems wrong to me too.
Back in the RAH days, GIJoe set itself apart as being 'the best'. More articulation, cooler designs, more gear, more vehicles, and so on. Now, there is literally nothing that makes it stand out from the other lines. Arguably, Black Series Star Wars is king of the mountain right now. Marvel figures are prob second. GIJoe is just doing the same things... but they seem like an afterthought almost. As for colors - let that come second to sculpt and design. I agree - make them wild and crazy and colorful. Realistic military is not the way to go. It has to be a mix. I'm not sure the current team 'gets' what makes GIJOE, 'GIJOE'. |

I just heard from JayC on Toynewsi.com youtube livestream that there will be no Classified color change Zartan. Apparently, there was a fan forum with Hasbro, and it was asked if there will be a color change Zartan ever. Hasbro said no as they don't have access to the special plastic to do that.
Was there anyone here on the fan forum?

Otherwise, if you take a look at the larger collecting community you see GI Joe is the envy of the domestic figures. They have ALL the articulation. Ball hinge necks, lower neck articulation, butterfly joints, double jointed elbows, ball socket waist, double knees, ankle rockers... Everything that everyone asks for. On the other hand Black Series is dropping double elbows and knees, it's taking a step back. For years Marvel Legends has been that standard, but like in the early 80's when Star Wars was the big deal in 3.75", GI Joe is taking what already is and turning it up. I think the design team has a tough task just because they're building on the 80's line. How many other toy lines in that era went for 14 years? It went from closely military inspired to wild and out there. They have a huge fan base that's all over the place to try and please. In terms of collectors there really 2 generations between original 80's Joe fans and 90's Joe fans. You're right in one thing, hit the right sculpt first, but if there's anything that GI Joe is it's always evolving. There's room for a lot of different versions. To me the real essence of Joe isn't hard line military, it's just right beside it, based on but not exactly real world. Not exactly military uniforms but close enough to show individual personality but fit in to a military unit. |
