using myself as an example, I was introduced at 5 or 6, which would've been 86-7. Completely missed the first two "real military" waves. Hung on through the 80's all the way through the first battle corps wave, when at 13, Not only did I feel it was getting too weird, but I'd also discovered... other things. I imagine it'd be much the same for someone with even 4 or 5 years on me- by the time the movie was released, they were already into Joe for one thing, it was becoming something else, and they were also growing up. And then there are the younger fans like you (Duke) and Yeet- by the time you guys came along, all of the stuff that looked odd to us older fans was already an accepted and established part of the mythos, and wouldn't have been "jumping the shark" to you guys. Hence your affinity for star brigade and it's spring loaded stuff. I truthfully think you guys might have the luckiest perspectives on it. The thing I find hilarious is how quickly those differences in perspective cause a shit show on site, with everyone assuming their perspective is the only "correct" one (that last is of course not directed at either of you).... but I'll tell you what, I'll be there with my can of laughing gas, gasoline boots, and rubber sword swinging every damned time!

I was young enough when the movie was released that I actually always really liked the whole Cobra La, terrible sci fi angle. I think a lot of what makes Gi Joe what it is to individual people comes down to what point in the Joe timeline they were introduced to it (and I think it also has to do with why there's always so much delicious arguing and for some, resentment on site. you know, those "deadly serious about toys" guys.)

And how much has that approach made Joe so far? This is now the third time they're blowing everything up and starting from scratch. It's all well and good to say "it worked for Transformers" if Joe hadn't gone down that path already. But it did and it flopped. Twice. Who knows... maybe third time is the charm. But the plot sounds an awful lot like RoC's approach of taking an existing story and shoehorning Joe names into things.

Lots of people don't talk about it but ROC product made a lot more money for Hasbro than 25th Anniversary product did. But it was a flash in the pan that was overproduced by Hasbro and overordered by retailers because they didn't want a repeat of what happened with Transformers a year or two earlier (the toys selling out almost instantly and them barely able to get any more to shelves before Christmas). But it didn't stick like Transformers. It sold a lot of product, but it wasn't a mega-hit like both Hasbro and retailers wanted (to the point that retailers demanded Hasbro remove movie-likenesses for the PoC line which IMO is a big part of what screwed up the Joe toy timeline from that point forward (Basically, if things had stayed "on track" the Renegades toys probably would have been hitting shelves when the Cartoon initially aired instead of after it had already been announced as cancelled). The Retaliation last minute delay/toy recall didn't do Hasbro any favors either (and that was all on Paramount). Though I would add that the final waves of Retaliation Product had some of the best "modern classics" we ever got, even if they came in Retaliation packaging...but that wasn't enough to keep the line afloat despite being "classic" product. |

See how star wars is now gearing movies to new fans, and with Mandalorian look slike they going to use the subscription service for older fans, it might be worth thinking about that approach with Joe. Do the new stuff for the films, like transformer was, but give me a gritty Resolute-like netflix series or the darker stuff from IDW or the grittier old first few episodes from Hama.
Are you listening Hasbro? Disney is pulling their stuff from Netflix, this would be a ripe place to get your universe going
