Well damn. with the troubled pre production this film has had already, I hope they still move forward with it soon. This seemed like our only shot to get Joe product back on the shelves in some form.

How sad is it that Hasbro has decided that there can be no GI Joe without a film to support it?

I honestly think the only way for Hasbro to make a line of Joe toys we want is through a Haslab type system of online preorders, producing only enough to fill those preorders. There's probably not enough of us to make even that worthwhile, profit-wise. They'd have to charge like $20-25 (or more) + shipping per figure just to not lose money because the production run quantities would be so low. |

Yeah. The mass retail action figure market isn't completely dead yet, but it's definitely on a downswing with only a few bright spots (Marvel Legends seems top of the heap these days).
The adult collector market appears (to me) to be experiencing a shift away from mass retail product and towards a combination of higher-end imports (MAFEX, SH Figuarts, Hot Toys) and boutique product (aka Kickstarters and lines that derive from successful kickstarters, or stuff like Super 7's MOTUC continuation). The vicious circle is that the higher costs of these products means there's less disposable income to go towards mass retail product, which just feeds the downward spiral. Don't take this as me saying it's collectors' fault or anything. Change is not inherently bad and younger kids just don't seem to be into action figures the way we were. But it may well be that the brands of our youth may fizzle out, only to find new life being sublicensed (or relicensed) to boutique manufacturers. That, or Hasbro et al are going to have to step up their game to try to match the import figures' perceived quality (and you can see signs of this both with their growing accessory complements for the "special collection" Marvel Legends and in things like the "Super-Real" Darth Vader they're offering this year). So, just as an example, imagine a world where Boss Fight Studios actually gets the license for 4" Joes because Hasbro doesn't consider it a viable mass-retail product anymore. It may be sad to see Joe gone from mass retail, but in the long run a serious "hiatus" for the brand might open up some different opportunities. |

At this point might as well do a full reboot and figure the brand out from the ground up.
It's a shame they let so much garbage onto the screen, in hopes, like Transformers, that the movies could be anything and as long as it had enough cool explosions on it, that people would buy it. I think creating a truly engaging GI Joe movie, that celebrates the breadth of characters and the iconic history of Joe is a difficult task... But I also think almost anything could have been better than what we got. Though I'm sure it also could have been worse. Point is, it needs a new starting point, but that's hard to do in films because people often remember the previous efforts. Honestly, they should go to another medium. Whether that's a Netflix type show or the tried and true cartoon formula, I don't know. |

I never got the sense that we would be getting a Hama storyline based Snake Eyes movie, and thus I wasn't very optimistic about this project anyway. If they are unable or unwilling to bring the best and most heartfelt origin story in GI Joe to a new audience, well then what's the point of any of this.
The Snake Eyes story can deliver awesome action while also making grown men misty eyed, this is on a silver platter, writers could even improve upon and flesh out what Hama did (after all he had a comic book to work with, these dorks have a Fing CGI era movie) I mean COME THE F ON!

Then again, maybe they DID plan on using it. I shouldn't jump to conclusions. I just doubt it.
