Yeah...I heard that. I’d like to see more confirmation, though.
If true, Derryl will be a huge loss. He was the one who promised no more 5 POS, and he is a constant voice in the room supporting our fave line. That, and I’d say he is one helluva guy, just like Mark. Joe means more to them than a bottom line dollar.

Perhaps Derryl will be kept on as a consultant in some capacity?

I'll go in mildly optimistic. The problem I had with the first film was it strayed to far from the source. The second one wasn't a bad film, but it wasn't great either. Focusing on Dwayne(I'll do anything for a paycheck) Johnson, wasn't the answer to put asses in the seats. Hopefully it will be a complete reboot, instead of a soft one.
I remember when ROC came out and people complained that the movie wasn't "real-life" like the comic. Then I would point out that the comic contained a sci-fi element from the start: Giant robot with micro (nano) bots crawling out of its head; under water bases; jet-pack backpacks, etc. Even in the toys you had these hybrid (surgically altered) bad guys. Sure, I didn't like the Cobra Commander backstory, but I felt that the story as a whole blended ideas from all manifestations of G.I. Joe. You had the "life-like hair and a kung-fu grip" comment which was a shout-out to the original 12" line. The accelerator suits reminded me of Sigma Six. The idea of G.I. Joe being an international team was dealt with in the DIC cartoon series. I just don't know if people are that familiar with the line anymore to make a G.I. Joe blockbuster film though. The line definitely needs some life breathed into it though! Jason |

Prepare yourself for more Snake Eyes action figures. I could honestly live with a Vietnam Snake Eyes with no mask, but that’s probably way to much to ask for.

Just a small note about box office revenue for movies. If a movie, like ROC for example, costs $150 million to make and generates $180 million at the box office, the movie did not make a $30 million profit.
Film studios and movie theaters split the box office revenue. For the first several weeks of release, most of the box office goes to the film studio. As the weeks progress, the balance shifts until it favors the theater. Also, the production cost typically doesn't include advertising, which can cost as much as the production cost. Depending on how heavily it's advertised. In order for a film to be profitable these days, it typically needs to generate a box office twice the production cost. Back in the film-only days, it was three times the production cost. When we're talking about film franchises like GI Joe, the movie probably didn't generate much, if any, of a profit for Hasbro. However, Hasbro makes money off of licensing and merchandising. With Hasbro now being more involved in the production of their films, we'll hopefully get merchandise more in-tune with the actual films. And films more in-tune with the franchise's history/future. All said, any new GI Joe movie going into production is a good thing for a franchise. It will be interesting to see how Hasbro handles the franchise in the toy world. 3.75" is a nigh-dead scale at retail. The Star Wars product at that scale doesn't seem to be a big mover anymore. I'm curious to see if GI Joe remains at 3.75", goes 6", or is a mixture of both. Also, I don't think there's a chance in hell that this restart of the GI Joe franchise is set in the 70s/80s. There won't be Vietnam references. They're not going to box themselves into that era for a franchise that needs to be aimed at kids. Last edited by Ash Talon; 11-07-2018 at 11:36 PM.. |

Derryl drops alot of nuggets in this interview from the final Joecon. Reading between the lines, you can extrapolate many interesting tidbits about the direction of the brand. But maybe new management will have other ideas?

I’m very sorry to hear about Daryl DuPriest. Despite any of my fanboy criticisms I always felt like we had one of our own on the inside of Hasbro with him. And while I know nothing about Hasbro’s operations I’d wager we have him to thank for any of the ARAH figures that we got in the modern era.
I collect many nostalgic toy lines but none are as special to me as G.I Joe. I know that my new Joe collection is what it is today thanks to Mr. DuPriest. Thank you for the memories, for reliving my childhood. Best of luck to you and your family in the days to come. In keeping with the thread’s title I think it would be fun if Paramount used the v2 or v1 Snake Eyes vintage card art as a movie poster.

I’m so jaded that when I read that I thought it was someone’s buddy being sarcastic...lol
I just want everyone to know, that anything I say is not to be taken to seriously. I never intend to rub anyone the wrong way, but it is difficult to convey the proper emotion through text format. I know on more than one occasion I’ve typed up something I thought was slightly humorous only to have it taken the wrong way. That’s never my intent. I love all you fuckers even though I have never personally met you guys! |
