Devils Due Publishing has lost the G.I. Joe comic book license, their contract will not be renewed as hoped says industry insiders.
I am a bit torn on this, I feel that Devil's Due has done well with the G.I. Joe brand giving fans over 7 years of great books. Apparently, Hasbro doesn’t feel the same. It's been known since mid-last year that the license was up and Hasbro had solicited proposals at Comic-Con for partners. Most assumed they would go ahead and renew with Devil's Due but the news is sadly no, Devil's Due is out and it looks like it will be either Marvel or IDW. G.I. Joe comics have been published in the past by Marvel, Image, Dark Horse and most recently by Devil's Due Publishing. I checked with a few other sources embedded deep in the comic book world and all indications are that IDW will edge out Marvel. Why you ask? Well, from what I figure, since IDW holds the Transformers license, Hasbro would prefer to have their eggs all in one basket if you know what I mean. They have already experienced a "mega-movie opening" with the giant robots and may have some great ideas having to do with Joe and the book's future. Plus, with both licenses held by the same company, it could just make things that much easier for Hasbro in the end. Remember this one ? (Click here) Joes with the Autobots and Cobra with the Decepticons? Classic. Well, that's where it lies as of today, we'll keep you posted if we hear anything further. I'm torn. I really dug the first volume of DD's Joe stuff. Didn't care for AE until recently though. |

I liked DD and havnt gotten too far into the WW3 yet but I felt that especially early on DD was very passionate about the title. While changing a bit here and there they stayed true to not just the original comic but added some heavy nods to the cartoon aswell while most importantly moving the stories of the characters forward. When its all said and done Ill definatly be saying good show to Blaylock and Devils Due for keeping it real... well except for that Snake-Eyes/CC vigilante thing... that made me scratch my head a bit... but I guess it worked

Well if IDW gets it, hopefuly they'll be able to finish the second GI Joe/Transformer crossover, that ended with only the first issue getting published a few years back.

man im kind of glad they did as they killed off to many great characters with worthless deaths. like LJ died of a piece of glass. they didnt give there deaths reasons like the marvel run did.

Sounds like they really do not have official confirmation on this one. One way or the other we will find out at ToyFair 2008

Does this mean that they will stop production at once, or will the remaining issues of some series such as America's Elite be released because they have already been written. If this is not the case will the next company who picks up the license be able to continue those stories or will they have to start new ones?

I hope Devil's Due at least finishes their run on WWIII... I've been following the series since the WWIII storyline began and was looking forward to the graphic novels containing the entire arc. I just bought the 2nd and 3rd graphic novels from the AE storyline. I hope they don't just leave it hanging. Does anyone know when DD first rec'd their license?

I really enjoyed both the artwork and direction DDP took onece the AE series started.
To be honest with you though, I thought the idea of the WWIII story line was good and off to a great start at first, but as of this last few issues, I am not as happy with it as I first was. ESPECIALLY the artwork as of late. It really looks bad IMHO if you compare it to some of the other Image/DDP stuff (again, see the first two story arcs of AE). I hope it does not go back to Marvel. It's bad enough what they did to the title towards the end of the original series and then just pulling the plug as they did on it out of no where. At least when Image and DDP took over, there have been a lot of new ideas and direction that Marvel never had. It was all just "ninja this" and "ninja that" crap. :( Eric |

well, this does make me sad, I loved 99 percent of what DDP did and thought that the run matured and bettered the line.
I hated the way the deaths happened in 31 but over all I loved your run Please DDP just finish the book on a high end and put the best possible books for the loyal who stuck with you every issue the last 7 years if IDW takes the license they will trash the continuity sadly like they did TFs and if that happens then my joe comic reading is finally over Just like Transformers |
