I find these kinds of statues kind of disgusting. I especially get fed up when I search for something innocuous on eBay but end up having to look at page after page of these bullshit pedophile statues because some anime series shared a keyword with whatever I was looking for. They’re stupid and obnoxious. And, as others have said, they undermine the idea that these characters are supposed to be competent adult soldiers.

I'm just gonna start calling you guys out for what you guys are doing, which is being unintentionally racist if I see posts like this without justification after I took the time to explain everything for 3 pages of posts before and literally just a few posts above yours. |

Racist?! Hahahahaha!!!
What a joke. YOU are not reading what HE is saying. Let me summarize for you: 1. He hates how the anime style product gets mixed in with his Ebay search (not racist). 2. He thinks they’re stupid and obnoxious (his opinion, not racist). 3. He thinks the anime/little kid look undermines the competency of adult female soldiers (while we ARE talking about fictional toy characters here, I still agree with him. G. I. Joe was ahead of its time in not only including characters of diverse background, but showing them and women as equally competent/capable. Also, NOT RACIST!!!).

Oh I'm sorry, Did you expect me to react like a normal person when you guys keep acting like this stuff is abnormal or pedophilia or sleazy over something that is essentially normalized in parts of California or especially in non-western communities over here?
Because if you did, you're an idiot. About a third of my co-workers have Wall scrolls and manga lying around in the office. Of these co-workers, almost all their children are heavily involved in Anime conventions and have Bishoujo style statues in their homes and cosplay. Of the other 2/3rd co-workers, about half of them when I surveyed them 2 years ago had children who were again attending Anime Expo and a few again had bishoujo statues and manga lying around. Oh and there's Anime and Manga shops all over the place as well as a stores that sell Bishoujo statues right in the open. ------------------- To me, the way you guys are acting is so hilariously racist it's hideous. |

Product can be sold, and product can be enjoyed.
Product can be left on the shelves, and product can be reviled. As long as the product is legal, opinions one way or another matter not at all. You apparently have hurt feelings over this, and I’m fresh out of safe spaces for you to recover in. Sorry!

Honestly they are kind of lame. I personally don't see the point. Although I don't get my rocks off by looking at "sexy cartoons" so I guess its just not my thing. Them looking like preteens makes it even more creepy. To each thier own but this is not my version of Joe.

You don't like you don't buy it, don't get all the internet anger at this, it's not Hasbro's doing, they are just making some money off a licensed property, which is important to show that there is interest in the brand at least. The existence of these statues doesn't change the fact that Hasbro is not making new toys

I like how no one reads when I posted explanations for this or don't seem to care what someone of Asian descendant would think reading this. I've lost my patience.

However I agree with you that the reaction in this thread is pretty silly - it reminds me of internet arguments about anime and manga from 20 years ago. I'd figured that the issue was settled a long time ago. I mean I doubt anybody saying these look 'child-like' were saying the same for J. Scott Campbell's work on Joe stuff a few years ago. He has a similar "large eye" and young-looking style to his character work mainly because he was influenced by manga artists, IIRC. At the end of the day they're statues of these characters, meant for a general audience who likes this style of artwork. There's no ill effects on the franchises of the other licenses done in this style, so what's the big deal? There's a world outside of people who appreciate hard-edged military realism that might appreciate these figures and take an interest in Joe. |

People tend to shut down if it's implied they're racist. It's a conversation stopper. People (less and less admittedly) equate 'racist' with 'bad person' and almost nobody thinks that they're a bad person. It's not constructive IMO. And I get that you were not outright calling anybody racist, but it's a giant roadblock of a word that just makes sides get drawn.

So...maybe we can tone down the number of arguments of passion for the product meanwhile in favor of giving credit to whatever the end result is? Expectations and reality may very well intersect much more than a lot of critics might currently think. Like, please stop looking for reasons to vilify that which hasn't been finalized or released yet. If it's as bad as you worried, then we can start a discussion as to why. If it's better, than that's a learning opportunity we can all take value from.
