I would actually dust off the guys who made Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow for this...the Conran brothers. Sky Captain was a fun, pulpy, old-fashioned movie. That is so much the direction the Joe movie needs to go rather than the dark, gritty, techno-thriller thing that Caruso seems to have a history with. The trouble is Hollywood execs don't know anything past the name of the brand. So they assume it's an old-fashioned war story that needs to be updated into a slick adult spy thriller. Wrong, wrong, wrong. That was the fundamentally wrong approach of the first two movies and now it looks like they're going for the same thing a third time.
The sensibility that made Joe a hit in the '80s was that of the comic books and cartoons of the time. It was a colorful, larger-than-life cast of characters with classic cliffhanging action scenes, swashbuckling romance, page-turning pulp novel mystery and surprises, and a dose of satirical and campy humor. The military and spy angles were nothing but window-dressing and did not drive the storyline. Last edited by JediJones; 03-18-2018 at 02:52 PM.. |

It is just mystifying that Hollywood can't get GI JOE right. Out of all the classic 80s IP, it would seem that a military/soft science fiction film would be a no brainer. Cinemax's STRIKE BACK nailed the GI JOE aesthetic for 4 seasons on a shoe string budget.

Wonderful. Once again, they got the wrong person to direct this film. The last thing GI Joe needs to be right now is gritty. They tried that with Retaliation, and look how far that got us. Also, are the allegations of a reboot now rendered void? That would be a shame. The film series needs a complete reboot, not another Retaliation.

I love the part where people act like there's a massive slew of A-list directors just chomping at the bit to direct a G.I. Joe movie.

News on the Hisstank? I'll admit it's refreshing, but I don't want to get my hopes up just yet.

Patty Jenkins directed Monster, a lot of TV before Wonder Woman and more TV after. You could say the same thing about any other comic book property from the past 40 years as how GIJOE is possibly perceived. Until the source material is respected, and I don't mean derived from or copied, I mean comics respected as a storytelling form by other industries; nothing will be given serious thought or attention as the valid form of storytelling it is. Movies from the past two decades have started to show people it can be done but even those writers struggle with how to present the comic on screen. It can be done. Frank Miller did it twice. Hollywood itself and their perceptions of the comic book genre are the obstacle. Much like no one wanted to work on a "toy book" in the Marvel offices, it is what you make of it. Story is key. Characters are key. Biases and prejudices to the art form from which something comes should be irrelevant. Sadly they are not.
