Why is it so hard for people to realize that this was a crummy assignment and pretty much nobody who worked on it wanted to?
IIRC this first Joe movie was greenlit from an unrelated original script in a mad rush to beat the writer's strike. Channing Tatum has said he was only in it because Paramount basically blackmailed him(he had a multi-picture deal and they told him this was one of the movies he had to make or be sued). The rest of the actors and crew signed on so they'd have a job in the pipeline to ride out the strike. The Land of the Lost movie with Will Ferrell was a similar situation. This was no labor of love on anyone's part, and it shows. I personally like the movie but I have to admit it's not very good. So if Eccleston's not exactly proud of this movie, who can seriously blame him? |

So if Eccleston's not exactly proud of this movie, who can seriously blame him? Here's the interview with Howard Stern where Channing Tatum says he "fucking hates" the GI Joe movie and explains the three picture deal, that it was rushed through to beat the writers' strike and that Mark Wahlberg was originally cast to play Duke, but was too old... The thing I found the most interesting in that Tatum interview is when he says (about not having a choice which films were in his contract) "I was lucky, they could have given me Scream 5..." Could have given me... Reading a bit more about this has given me new insight into how little power many actors, especially up and coming ones, have against the studios who own their contract. I actually appreciate Eccleston's and Tatum's honesty. It's plainly clear that it's not a great movie and from multiple reports a total rush job and chaotic set. I'd rather they be honest and call a spade a spade than lie and try to polish a turd they filmed a decade ago.

No live action G.I. Joe movie will ever be very good because it will always be a watered down, soulless representation that will supposedly appeal to a broader audience. I remember when I saw ROC and thought to myself, "This isn't G.I. Joe. This is a typical action movie that uses GI Joe character names." If it weren't for Snake Eyes wearing a costume that was true to the character, the movie could have been called just about anything if you replaced some of the names.

Put me up among those who'd like to see every copy of Rise of Cobra burned in a dumpster fire.

I'd also argue that Wahlberg has essentially been playing Duke for years now. |
